Once again we are in a new year and it is nice to see that most of our classmates are doing so well in all their varied activities and interests.
The Southern New England Telephone Company announced last month the appointment of Pete Foster as the new division commercial manager for the Eastern part of Connecticut. Pete will continue to live in Wallingford. Pete has been with the company in various positions since graduation. Pete is also active in local affairs being a member of the town planning and zoning commission. He and Anne have three children.
For many years Frank Stern has taught geography in Massachusetts and Rhode Island not far from the good skiing he always enjoyed. He has now taken a position as assistant professor in the geography department of McGill University, so it will be very convenient for him to enjoy his favorite sport along with Lelle and their sons, Dick and David.
Last summer Ken and Barbara Carpenter attended the Alumni College accompanied by their teen-age daughters, Robin and Leslie. They flew East from their home in Los Gatos, Calif., which is down the peninsula from San Francisco. Ken is an engineer with Lockheed Aircraft in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Heard from Dave Kadyk saying he is still practicing law in Tampa, where he is a partner in one of the leading firms. Dave has four sons, the last two being twins now five years old. Dave says he sees Howie Hilton, a busy advertising executive, in town occasionally.
While speaking of Florida, Dick Bredenburg writes that he had a fellowship for study this past summer in the Scandinavian countries. After a month in that part of Europe, Huldah and the four children joined Dick and the whole family spent three weeks camping through the other countries on the Continent. Their oldest daughter, Ingrid, now sixteen, stayed to attend school in France in an exchange program. Dick also writes that "I'm in love with my work at Florida Presbyterian College. It is a tremendous institution, with top-notch faculty and a first-rate student body." Dick is director of teacher education at the school.
It certainly was good news to hear that Bill Matthews is now technical supervisor in the merchandising section for the combined New Departure-Hyatt Bearings Division of General Motors in Sandusky, Ohio. After moving from Bristol, Conn., last summer, Bill, Mary and their four children are living in Huron, Ohio, right on Lake Erie.
One of our regulars at reunion, Herb Call says he will definitely be there this June. Herb's company, R. P. Burroughs, which designs pension plans, just merged with Marsh & McLennan, so Herb is now with that company as an actuarial consultant in their office in Boston.
It seems that it has been a long time since I've been able to utilize my old stand-by for news, namely births, but there is still some spark left in the '48's. Last September, Dave Aula's wife, Joyce, produced their third son, whom they called Dan, to accompany Don and Doug. The two older boys are now almost thirteen and eleven. Dave is controller for D. L. Auld Company, manufacturers of decorative trim for the auto industry, in Columbus, Ohio.
Dick Ruggles reports he had a nice visit with Jim Hughen when Jim called while in Norfolk on business. Dick is pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church. He says he has enjoyed the Alumni Club of Tidewater, Va., but didn't see Roy Wilson who is a Commander in the Navy and formerly stationed in the area, but now is at the Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Md.
There really isn't much time left to plan for our reunion in June - now only three months away. Even though the snow is piled up in front of your doorstep send in your reservations. Chairman Dick Barlow has by far the best program planned we've ever had and assures us also that the Tumultuous Twentieth will have the largest turnout of any '48 reunion. If you have sitter problems, bring the kids along. Plenty of others are planning to bring their children. They will have a great time and the cost will be relatively inexpensive.
More about reunion details next month. See you then.
