In this second month of the 1968 Alumni Fund, I want to lead off with news of some from the group of all too often unsung heroes among our classmates, namely, our undercompensated public school teachers. They aren't paid enough to be big givers; but their undercompensation reduces the school taxes of most of you, which in turn should leave you with a little bit more to give to Dartmouth.

Harry McCaffrey, whose outstanding abilities in this field were recognized by a John Hay Fellowship in 1963-64, now heads the English Department at Newtown (Conn.) High School. He and wife Elizabeth have two children, Catherine, 15, and Thomas, 9.

Bachelor Fergie Thie! has left the Jesuit order, with which he was in Canada, changed his name to the more easily rememberable John Fergus, and is now teaching in the Brookline (Mass.) public schools. Fellow bachelor Bob Miller teaches math in Tucson, Ariz.

Also in sunny Tucson is medic PeleCrowe, a pediatric surgeon. He and wife Frannie had two daughters Kristen, and Amy, by now 16 months, and were due for a third child last month. Surgeon P. G. Cornish resides in similarly sunny Albuquerque with wife Barbara and a brood of three: Jock, 11; Eric, 10; and Anne, 8.

Farther north in the land of the great sky, Warren Thamarus is a pediatrician in Missoula, Mont., where he is with the Western Montana Clinic. He and wife Marietta have four offspring: Karen, 15; Mike, 12; Susan, 10; and Mary, 8. On the side, Warren fishes and serves with the National Ski Patrol.

After a stint in the Detroit area, fellow medic Erich Wisiol is now practicing neurosurgery in Minneapolis. His family includes wife Edith and daughters Johanna, 9, and Erika, 7.

Another group we're too often inclined to forget are our classmates still in military service. Commander Don Rand is executive officer of Naval Security Group Activity operating out of Okinawa. He and wife Barbara have three children: Donna, 10; Leslie, 8; and Susan, 3.

Air Force Major Bill Farnham holds the title of Flight Commander and is an instrucor pilot in A-IE combat crew training. He, wife Williametta, and brood of four — Shelley, 12; William, 11; Shawn, 9; and Mark, 8 - currently reside in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Jack Berggren has been in Europe for the last three years as the first managing director of Kodak OY, Helsinki, Finland, a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak of Rochester, N. Y. He and wife Erika have two children, Steven, 7, and Ingrid, 5. Jack notes that "Hanover winters were good practice for this job!"

From that chill, let us head for Dalton, Ga., where bachelor Dave Wiggins resides. He is vice-president and treasurer of Ten-Tex Corporation, manufacturer of carpet and textile equipment. Pianist Dave reports that there is a new concert grand coming into his life, which is more than an erst-while pianist, now Philadelphia lawyer, can afford.

Bill Roberts is a sales manager for 3M Company. He, wife Peggy, and family of four - Ann, 10; Nancy, 7; Bill Jr., 5; and Mike, 3 - live in Naperville, Ill. CaseyMcKibben's wife reports that they've had a change of address to Concord, Mass., because Casey is now Conover-Mast regional manager for New England rather than New York.

Du Pont has deprived us of our only class representative in South Carolina by moving Al Wright slightly north to Martinsville, Va. There Al is engineering supervisor with respect to the manufacture of nylon fibers. He and wife Barbara have a brood of four: Lynn, 12; Russell, 10; Sally, 8; and Phyllis. 6. On the outside, Al is involved with "Cub Scouts, family, and rock hunting when time permits."

Out in Chicago, Reed Badgley is probably making a mint during the currently extremely active stock market as a registered representative with Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis. He and wife Mary have a daughter, Anne.

Down in Houston, Tex., Champ Smith is vice-president of Southwestern Savings Association. He and wife Joanne also have one daughter, Bryant, 13. Champ sits on the board of the Civic Music Association, Amigos de Las Americas, and the local Chamber of Commerce.

Al Katz has come home from Chicagoland to what is now called Greater Delaware Valley, the new euphemism for the greater Philadelphia area, with its boundaries given a good flex. Al is general manager, responsible for all 22 branches, of Goodall Rubber Co. He, wife Jean, son Jeff, 14, and daughters, Susie, 11, and Maggie, 9, now call Morrisville, Pa., home.

Jim Bonnar had a longer trip back East, from California to Havre de Grace, Md., a town whose name Penn Central Railroad conductors pronounce in a fashion designed to give French teachers heart attacks. There Jim is plant manager for the same employer, Hexcel Corp., which makes structural honeycomb for aerospace uses. He and wife Dolores have two children, Steve, 12, and Karen, 4.

Gary Mansur and wife Marge have a son, Mark, who weighed in on March 18 at 7 lbs., 4 oz. The birth announcement notes: "Boys are available after all!" Harry Berwick, security analyst with Loomis, Sayles & Company, Boston, has been awarded the professional designation of Chartered Financial Analyst by the Institute of same.

I don't know whether it's attributable to the fact that Tigers really don't dominate Tigertown, or whether they are less ingrown than I had always suspected. In any event,

"Town Topics," Princeton's town newspaper, nominated Hugh Johnston and wife Suzanne as "man and woman of the week" in their Washington's Birthday issue.

Described as "one of the Princeton Community's most stimulating and imaginative couples ... the Johnstons in their late 30's are earning recognition as producers of prize-winning films in national film festivals, as participants in educational television programs, and as professionals as capable of producing two-minute 'quickies' for the New York World's Fair as they are of documenting overseas trade missions for the widely separated Governors of Oregon and New Jersey."

After Dartmouth, Hugh was trained as an interpreter of Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey, Calif. Suzanne holds degrees from Radcliffe and the Universities of Chicago and Pittsburgh. Both free-lanced, she as art critic for "Arts" magazine and he as a film script writer. Both natives of Pittsburgh, Pa., they re-met at "On Film," a now defunct Princeton-based company. They have three daughters, including nine-year-old twins.
