This seems to be the month for a good deal of activity, including solicitations of the Third Century Fund, Alumni Fund, class officers weekend, reunion plans and varied other news.
Bill Russell has gotten off to a terrific start with the Alumni Fund and we are substantially ahead of last year's pace. We will keep you informed through this column of our performance which is expected to at least equal last year's record which was the best in our Green Derby group.
Class officers weekend, May 2 and 3, will give us an opportunity to complete plans for the reunion scheduled for June 20-23. I want briefly to urge your attendance at the reunion for it is our first opportunity to get back to Hanover as a class. By now all '63's should have received the reservation slips from Bob Naussau, whose address is Apartment 204, 27701 Lenox, Madison Heights, Mich. 48071. Please let him know your plans for the reunion and send along $65 for reservations (a couple) or $35 (single).
Several '63s' wives have written to me to tell me of address changes and births, including Elizabeth Ann to Mark Horwich and his wife, Andrea, on March 7. Mark is completing his first year of residency in medicine at Duke Medical Center and will be starting a three-year residency in neurology at Cornell Medical Center in New York in July. Mark and Andrea also have a three-year-old son, David, who now has a little sister. Mitzi and Jacques Shure have sent in their new address in Little Rock, Ark. (Chateau de Ville, Apartment 567, H Building, 6310 Asher Avenue). Howie Culver wanted to report the birth of a future alumna when Dartmouth goes co-ed: Marjorie Rose, born January 26. He indicates he has no other news to pass alone but our congratulations to Howie and his wife.
Frank Finsthwait and Linda Anne Murphy have announced their marriage on March 29 in Atlanta, Ga., in the Peachtree Christian Church, which seems to me to be a really "deep South" name. I have no other news on Frank and Linda's plans concerning where they will live and would appreciate hearing from Frank or his bride about their future plans.
The surge in marriage and engagement news this month also includes the engagement of Larry Swift and Marilyn Dudik of Ansonia, Conn. Marilyn graduated from New Rochelle in 1967 and after graduate studies at Massachusetts College of Art, she has been teaching Art in the Norwood, Mass., public schools. Larry was with the Navy for four years and is now with John Hancock, making use of the Master's degree he obtained at Northeastern University. I understand Larry and Marilyn plan a July wedding.
. Also announced was the engagment of Russ Koppang to Mary Derring. Russ is teaching Math at Concord, N. H., High School after completing his service with the Navy. Mary is a senior at Keene State College. They plan a June wedding. Our list of newlyweds also includes Alex Ghiselin and Diane Welter, whose parents live at the unusual address of Roast Meat Hill Road, Killingworth, Conn. If I were Diane, I would never leave that address. She is studying at the Rhode Island School of Design and they are living in Hopkinton, N. H. Alex is northern New England correspondent for the Boston Globe. Our last wedding announcement for the month concerns the marriage of Dave Leighton to Mary Ellen Vanderßrook. Dave and his wife were married in Coconut Grove, Fla., which is Mary Ellen's home. The marriage took place in February and they are presently living in Wayzata, Minn.
Dave Smoyer, formerly administrative assistant to the president of the North American Soccer League, is now associate director of athletics at Yale. Dave practiced law for a time after his graduation from Harvard Law School. He is presently serving as Yale's chief administrator of athletics, assisting De'Lanney Kiphuth. It sounds like quite an interesting job.
I have received information from Williams College that Pete Andre has been appointed assistant professor of Mathematics for a three-year term. After graduating from the college, Pete obtained a Master's degree from Yale in Mathematics. I hope see him and his former roommates at th reunion when we can reminisce about th South Fayer weather-pitched battles.
From Drake University came news thaRick Adams has been named assistant Dm! fessor of History. Rick obtained a Phn from Cornell University and tauaht th' past year at the State University in Platts burgh, New York. tts'
A final plea to send in your reservation, for the reunion to Bob Naussau. Art Williams and his committee have planned really unusual reunion which will be well worth the time and effort to attend. It will also be a heck of a lot of fun. See you there
