The current party line as regards the news from the classes is to discourage trivia in favor of "hard news" and vital issues. Certainly one of the most vital of issues is the question of co-education at Dartmouth. If you received a questionnaire on this subject from Paul Urion give it some constructive thought and send it in. Paul, as a member of the Alumni Council, is in a position to make known our opinions.

By way of "hard news" it should be mentioned that John R. McLane Jr. has been elected a director of Ball Bearings, Inc. John is a partner in the prominent New Hampshire law firm of McLane, Carleton, Graf, Greene and Brown. His late father John R. McLane, '07 was a Trustee of Dartmouth College and his sister Elizabeth is married to Dave Bradley.

Word of Ham Mitchell's election as a director of Union Pacific Corp. and its principal subsidiary, Union Pacific Railroad Co., has just been received. Ham has been president and chief executive officer of Dun & Brad-street since 1968," a couple of years after its merger with the Reuben H. Donnelley Corp. of which he was chief executive officer. Ham is also a director of Irving Trust Company, Commerce and Industry Association of New York. Ham and his wife Betty live in Rye, N. Y.

Our Pace Setter of 1967, Fran Reilly, who was formerly vice president for administration for Ling Temco-Vought, Inc. of Dallas, has moved over to the B. F. Goodrich Company as vice president and treasurer. Fran was treasurer of Wilson & Company in Chicago in 1967 when it was acquired by LTV. He was named vice president-administration for LTV in January 1970 after serving nine months as a vice president. Fran was a member of his area executive committee for the Third Century

This past July Belden G. Bly Jr. announced his candidacy for re-election as Saugus Representative in the Massachusetts-Legislature. A House member of the past 22 years, Bly has devoted much of his legislative activity to educational affairs.

Gus Southworth, our Class Treasurer, has passed along to me some information relative to the increase in 1938 Class dues to the level of $10.00. It seems that hardly more than 50% pay their annual dues; the remainder, including 52 who contribute to the Alumni Fund but do not pay their dues, receive gratis the first issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE each fall. Further as we lose our classmates our treasury has to pick up the cost of the MAGAZINE, which has to be sent to the widows. Finally, after consolidating various funds and donating $5000 to the Third Century Fund, we are left with a balance of approximately $3000 which is somewhat less than a comfortable figure. If, as a class, we are to continue to support the College we must find the means to increase the funds available.

I plan to be in Hanover for the meeting of the class officers on October 10, the weekend of the Princeton game, and I promise to have hard news relative to classmates who attend and a report on the handling of vital issues by the new administration of President Kemeny.
