The annual January thaw has been here all this week, but has stayed longer than in years past. As a result, the last vestiges of earlier snows hide in protected shadows and spring bulbs bravely poke their shoots into the warm sunlight of deep winter. Eastern ski areas are having another bad year, and the gasoline shortage doesn't help matters.

It's taken me about three weeks to get used to daylight saving time and those very dark mornings, but I guess it must be even tougher on those of you in the western half of the time zone. Florida is considering going back to standard time which is fine with me because I'll be able to get earlier starting times next month when I'm there on vacation.
