Up-to-date news is scarce, but my son, Charles M., visited with Hermon Farwell, whom he met returning from a three-mile walk. Hermon's health is excellent, his interest in the Class and the College is keen. He commented on the study on the directions, which Dartmouth might take in a very positive way. Among other subjects, Hermon said, "The older classes were against coeducation, but the younger classes were for it. If you left it to the older alumni, there would be no changes and that would be undesirable, as we must go ahead." My son was so pleased that Hermon was so aware of the necessity for Dartmouth to go ahead and fill present day educational demands. Hermon had just returned from a trip to Colorado and Illinois where he had visited children and grand children.
Howard Chivers '39 reports that his father and mother are in good health and that there are no "earth-shaking" developments in the family. Howard's wilderness camp, Tamagami, had an excellent summer with good staff, good kids, and good weather.
As for myself, the care at the Hanover Convalescent Center is excellent. Ida's two sisters from Burlington, Vt., have joined me. I am up each day. I go home several times a week. I have attended three football games, having been taken there in my son Bernard's Winnebago camper. We have been parking in the Lutheran Church lot and enjoy our repast in the camper, rather than on the tailgate of a station wagon. The Big Green Machine has been successful so far. The defense has been great, the offense inspired and if we can avoid injuries, overconfidence and the unforseen, it could be a good season.
