To continue with news items accumulated over the summer, Gordon and VirginiaSmith returned from a salmon fishing trek to the Northwest in the course of which they saw the Sam Martins and Virginia visited many old friends. Gordon had a summer art show at. the North Shore Children's Hospital in Salem, Mass., where his caricatures made a particular hit. Blondy and Sally Lashar "drifted" through New England for three weeks in July with a two-day stopover in Hanover. Lowell Wormley sent Tom Gillespie a picture taken at a Lacrosse Reunion in Hanover at which Lowell said he had a great time but missed seeing any other players from the teams of '26 and '27.
Len Dunn, starting his tenth year in Arizona, writes that with golf and swimming the year round he manages to keep in good shape. He and Jane now have two grandchildren, the second added this past year. Curt Wright says that he seems to be leading a backward life: an office lawyer for 25 years; next, "an even more immured and cloistered type, i.e. law professor"; now "banging about in court much of the time getting my lumps with younger chaps." Merritt Joslyn headed for the Orient in September in search of more colored movies, but not before investing in a "golf puppy"—an electronically operated golf cart that holds two bags and follows seven feet behind the players, a gadget which he says should soon be available nationally. George and Dorothy Marks were in Europe from February 8 through April 15 and in May headed for South Dakota, the Yellowstone, and Sun Valley. Roy Blanchard reports that another grandson, born August 10, makes it an even half dozen, three of each.
Chuck Brewster had a family party at Kennebec Point on his birthday, and later Chuck and Jo Field visited on their Way from Cape Breton to Hanover and home to Illinois. The Brewsters have bought a winter home in Landrum, S. C., but will continue to be at Georgetown, Me. in the summer. Jon and RosemarieRintels made their first visit to Hanover in 16 years this summer and were much impressed by the growth of the College and by Hopkins Center. Jon was recently named Director of Mobilization Plans Division, Bureau of Domestic Commerce.
The Bernie Bardes spent last year in Europe and, among other activities, attended summer school in Hungary. No books, classes, or homework, but lectures, sightseeing, touring, visiting museums, concerts, gypsy bands, dancing, and, everywhere, wine tasting. They were the only Americans in the school and received real VIP treatment. "Everywhere we went they told us their local wine was the best in the world—modest people—but our own California wine is just as good."
A card from Rog Bury, mailed from Kotor, Yugoslavia, the day before he and Marion left Dalmatia for Greece, said, "The Adriatic is a sailor's paradise, unbelievable weather, 1000 islands, always a lee, scenery spectacular." By now the Burys are probably among the isles of Greece, and we can expect some pretty enthusiastic reports from that region, too.
The Class will be saddened to learn that Ross Lyon lost his wife, Virginia, last Memorial Day, and our sympathy goes out to him. He says that his three children have been wonderful and that he now has "ten grand-nippers, not enough to qualify for the '27 Derby"; it sounds, however, like enough to keep things interesting. Ross says he sees Kroggie and Gertrude Krogstad and Al Chabot and his daughter Susan, and that he hears from a few more on occasion.
Dud Bonsai sent Tom Gillespie the adjacent picture taken at Brick Stone's home at Chatham, Mass., on July 31. Those three at least, don't look like members of any forty-five year class, but apparently we all are. Chairman Paul Hannah has called a meeting of his Reunion Committee for the early morning of Saturday, October 9, before the regular Fall Reunion Class Meeting, and plans for our Forty fifth, to be celebrated in 1973, of course, will be officially under way. You'll be hearing much more of them from time to time, but it's not too early now to start laying plans to be in Hanover for that great occasion.
Three '27's, Charlie Bartlett, Dud Bonsaiand Brick Stone, from left, are shownherce at a get-together last July at Brick'ssummer home in Chatham, Mass.
