The first dinner meeting of the Class of 1905 was held December 27 at the Clearwater Beach Hotel with five men present and three ladies. It was a sort of a delayed Christmas party for the local '05 men. Later in February we plan another when more Dartmouth men are around.
Attending the dinner were John andLucy Bell, Roger and Jane Brown, FredChase, C. C. Hills, Arthur Lord '10 and his sister, Laura Lord Scales, widow of R. L. Scales '01. Mrs. Scales was for many years Dean at Smith College and was one of the first women to receive an honorary degree from Dartmouth College.
On December 17 I received a note from Varney Russell's daughter, Grace War- wick, saying that she was going to have her folks with her for Christmas and planned a surprise party for her father for his birthday. I notified the '05 boys to send greetings cards to her that she could present to him. I talked to her on January 3 and heard that the party was a tremendous success; he had received over ninety notes and cards. Varney and his wife had a wonderful holiday and returned home, tired but happy. I suggest that 1905 adopt as a permanent program the 90-year party and start this reunion to make plans for classmates' birthdays. Charles Hodgman will be 90 on September 22 and C. C. Hills on November 19.
I have the sad duty to report the passing of Harold Haskell. A telegram from his daughter brought the news of his death on December 28. I had reported in November that he was in the hospital with a broken hip but had no further details. Harold's wife Mary died in 1948 and his daughter had kept house for him since that time. They made their home at 2 Kirk Street, Nashua, N. H. 03080.
I received a letter from Ann Sweeny, widow of our classmate Charles. We had not known that Charles died in 1959. Ann reported that one of their sons had recently died; the other son lives near her in Rutland, Mass. 1905 extends its sympathy to the Sweeny family.
Class birthdays to record are for Herford Elliott, born February 3, 1883, Robert Falconer, born February 16, 1882, Fred Chase, born April 9, 1883, and John Bell, born May 21, 1883.
Charles Hodgman sent a beautiful Christmas card with a color slide of a crimson rose he had propagated and grown in his garden. It is called "Dortmound."
