The Ivy Group presidents, at a special meeting in March, voted to permit freshmen to participate on varsity teams in all sports that are of an individual nature.

At Dartmouth, this agreement will permit freshman competition in varsity cross country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, karate, rifle, rugby, sailing, skiing, squash, swimming, tennis, track, white water sport, and wrestling. Exceptions to the rule are baseball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse, rowing, and soccer.

The legislation is effective at the start of the 1971-72 academic year. It will permit the Ivy League institutions to compete on a more equal footing with other colleges that are permitted under NCAA regulations to use freshmen in all varsity sports except football and basketball.

Director of Athletics Seaver Peters indicated that while freshmen will now be eligible for the indicated varsity sports, Dartmouth will retain freshman teams in all sports as it has in the past.
