I'm not sure you realize that this column and other items for the Alumni Magazine must be written six weeks ahead which explains why it may seem to take quite some time to read here about an event that took place awhile ago, so I'm writing in January for the March issue. It is sad to report that 1973 is starting out with the loss of three members of the Class; Hank Billings on January 9, Emil Hokanson on January 10, and Oliver Brown on January 26. More details will be found in this issue or next, month in the obituary section.
In addition to the lists of '36 offspring mentioned in this column in November and January, I now have a list which the College says is complete so I will give you the additions; Class of '73: Terry, son of Norm Allen; Jonathan, son of Nelson Brown; John, son of Bob Keeler; Russell, son of Ferris Mack; John, son of David Scherman; and Thomas, son of Norm Sherry. Class of '74: Jim, son of Rogers Bayles; Robert, son of John McKernan; Anthony, son of David Scherman; Adna Jr., son of A. Heaton Underhill; Allan, son of A. Addis Ziegler; Class of '75: Terry, son of Norman Allen; Frederick, son of John H. B.Knowlton. This makes a total of 25 plus two in Thayer and Tuck. Quite a good representation.
President Builter has announced that there will be the usual informal gathering of any interested classmates on Saturday, May 5 in Hanover after the class officers meeting held by the College every year. More details will be forthcoming in Tithe or in one of these columns. Also the fall in formal reunion in Hanover will be the weekend of the Dartmouth-Penn game on October 13. The location will be announced as soon as it is confirmed Other occasions on which some members of the Class will gather will be the Alumni Ski Weekend March 2-4 and the Alumni College which is August 12-23 this year. A new venture is Class of '36 Reunion in Portugal organized by BillWyman and scheduled for April 20-29. This should be an enjoyable trip for all concerned and hopefully there will be a report on it after they return.
The February Tithe, which reported on its survey prompts me to comment that I would welcome news from all members of the Class including those from whom we seldom if ever hear. Obviously we can only cover those people and places nearby or who provide us the information, either about themselves or other classmates they may encounter. We'll welcome any help, information or suggestions you want to make.
The current edition of the Dartmouth College Alumni Officers booklet contains the names of a number of '36ers active in Alumni affairs, with Paul Cleaveland representing Region I on the Alumni Council (New England States, Quebec, and Eastern Provinces). Among Alumni clubs John S. Sullivan is secretary of the Merrimack Valley (Lawrence-Lowell, Mass.) Al Momenee is president of the Detroit Club; Dick Heffler is secretary of Western Oklahoma; Jim Pearson is vice president of the Phoenix Club where DuneNewell and Bob Lewis are also active; AndySchmidt and Gene Tamburi are active in Pioneer Valley (Holyoke-Springfield, Mass. area) and Dr. Bill Stimson was host for the Western Washington Club's annual summer picnic. I would welcome reports from any of you who see other members of the Class or who think the Class would be interested in some of these activities. In College enrollment activities we have Eddie Chamberlain on the Alumni Council Committee on Enrollment and Admissions. Also Ray Reitman is director of enrollment for the New Jersey Area while Dr.John Cartwright has District #580 North Dakota and Bob Morris has District #900 Los Angeles.
A clipping from the Lake Barcroft Newsletter, Falls Church, Va., tells of a "Champagne Musicale" at which Bob and Decima Button entertained, Bob at the piano and Decima "sang" her way from England and Ireland to Broadway." Bob and Decima met over a piano during an air raid in London 30 years ago. Perhaps we should sign them up to perform at our next reunion.
Congratulations are in order for Dr, Bill Sicher of NYC. Bill has been appointed a trustee of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. After Dartmouth, Bill graduated from Rush Medical College and also holds an M.S. in Medicine from the University of Minnesota. He is attending physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. He and Ann have two sons, David '67, and Mark who is currently a medical student at Rush, and two grandchildren.
A Christmas card and "newsletter" from TomLuey confirms my feeling that our Class seems to do lots of traveling. The Lueys were in Florida last February then in June went to Scandanavia including Denmark, Sweden, and Finland and finally, England. Among the highlights was an overnight trip across the Baltic to Helsinki on a new 1000 passenger ferryboat complete with night club, swimming pool, etc. While flying from Stockholm to London, there was a suicide attempt aboard the plane which diverted to Hamburg and included unloading for a bomb search. P.S. They got home safely.
A last minute flash confirms that the fall gettogether will again be at Stone End Lodge, Sunapee, N.H. Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13. Send Ray Builter $10 per person as a deposit. In case of overflow, we will try to get accommodations nearby as we did last time.
