Trying to put together this column during the Christmas-New Years holiday season is always difficult and it would be easier if I did it sooner, however I'm always hopeful that the Christmas mail will bring a bagful of news along with the greetings. Unfortunately, the news bag wasn't all that full, but thanks to those who did add some notes. Jackson Smith, the Class' ex-Olympic diver, diving judge, gymnasium, and swimming pool designer, gave me some additional information concerning the Columbia University Gym which I mentioned in November. Against his wife Yumi's better judgment arid his partner's concern, Jack, dressed in bathing trunks, delivered a brief speech and then did an inaugural dive from the 10' board. At the dedication of the Dartmouth pool in 1963 (which he designed) he did an inaugural dive from the 32' tower and at the next one at Iona a month or two from now he will do a dive from the I-meter board. He's hoping his firm will start a line of cocktail lounges or massage parlors where the dedication ceremonies will be a little less strenuous.
Another letter deserves quotation in part. It was written by Earl. Copp, who with wife Florence lives in Harrisburg, Pa., and is staff assistant to the Republican leadership in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He says "last fall I wrote a whole slew of campaign articles and speeches that were marvelous, but not marvelous enough to prevent the Republicans from losing 19 seats in the House. Having been involved in several landslides, I can say with authority that it's more fun to be on the winning side.
"Nevertheless, there's a sure-fire formula for a defeated party; shut up and let the members of the majority, swollen with arrogance and conceit, start fighting among themselves. Let civil war develop and confusion reign, then move in for the kill. Therefore I say unto you, O defeated ones, take heart, be of good cheer, for a party in power will always find a way to louse itself up, since power is a poison for which there is no antidote." I think Earl is speaking from considerable experience!!!
Dave Wilson, still living in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where he is in what he believes will be the last year of "principal-ing 700 little Primary- Elementary angels at Hawthorn School" is looking forward to a trip back to Hanover when he does retire. He and Margaret have two daughters and a son, and, when last mentioned, had four grandchildren.
Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company of Springfield announces that John Sevey has been elected a senior vice president, continuing as chairman of the finance committee. He had been vice president, finance, since January 1973. John also serves as a trustee of Springfield College, the Medical Center of Western Massachusetts, and Hampden Savings Bank; a director of Sterling Radiator Co., and a member of the Special Advisory Committee on Investments for the State Retirement System.
I was interested in the list of members of the Class of '78 that appeared in the November issue and in particular the fact that our Class has three girls and only two boys in '78 although we should have mostly boys as a carryover in the classes of '75, '76, and '77. I hope to get an up- to-date list to give you before too long. I have received the list of the College Alumni Officers which I look through to find where members of the Class are working for the College in Alumni affairs, other than the class officers. We still have two on the Alumni Council - PaulCleaveland from Hudson, N.H., and Bill Curtis from Boulder, Colo.; Bob Morris, president of the Dartmouth Club and enrollment director in Los Angeles; John S. Sullivan, secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Merrimack Valley, HarryCoronis, job placement chairman for the Nashua, N.H., Club; and Dick Hefler, secretary of the Oklahoma City Dartmouth Club.
Pages 34 and 35 of the December AlumniMagazine contained the names of several classmates in case you don't read the club columns. Newell, Momenee, Morris, and Smith are active in the clubs in their respective areas and the picture of Chet Young and caption underneath shows that he continues to be active in community affairs in his area. A recent Kipplinger Letter lists Bill Yelverton as London editor of the European Letter. Don't know if he is or has moved to England to do this but as yet no address change received. Speaking of London, Tithe editor Frank Kappler's son Cliff has been assigned there by N.B.C. as assignment chief of their news bureau. Also, perennial Senior Golf Society addict Gil Sykes plans to go with Ann to Gleneagles, Scotland, for the tournament June 28-July 5 and offers to send any other potential Senior the information if you are interested. A recent edition of The N.Y. Times carried the engagement picture of a pretty girl, Jo Anne Williams, who is going to marry Peter Coutrakon '74 son of our Judge and Mrs. BasilCoutrakon of Springfield, Illinois.
Hope that the New Year has started well for you, that you will send along anything new or interesting you might know, and that you will start planning now for the '75 Alumni Fund again led by Frank Curtis, and think ahead to Reunion '76.
