Don Pogue angrily informs us that the College has fired Professor Jonathan Mirsky. Since we are unfamiliar with the merits of Professor Mirsky's dismissal, we pass along this information for your own digestion. Don, by the way, is practicing law in New Haven.

Turning to an old subject, Paul Baiocchi called about the letter written by Elinor Lipraan which appeared in this space in the February issue. Paul expressed gratitude to Elinor Lipman, noting that the comments in the column to which Ms. Lipman referred exhibited an "insensitivity" which is inappropriate in today's society. Paul expressed disappointment for the College.
In the interest of objectivity, however, it seems only fair to relate another letter which yours truly recently received:
Mr. Glovsky, In reference to the controversy raging in your column I would like to make two points.
1) If indeed your purpose was to imply that the lady in question is a featherbrain; reference to her attending Colby Jr. College would have been sufficient. Your only crime, therefore, would have been beating the point to death.
2) If, however, your intentions were simply to report the facts, I feel your choice of words should be defended. First, I am sure "munificence" was intended only to highlight the fact that all colleges are "very generous in giving" (Webster's New World Dictionary) degrees in light of the costs of education compared to tuition fees. Secondly, the suffix "ette," although sometimes meaning little, also refers to female. I am sure that you were only being prudent in trying not to offend those females who take umbrage when a masculine term i.e. bachelor, is used in reference to them.
I hope these observations will help to vindicate you and your column.
Sincerely, R.G. (Rick) "Will" Willets Rick Willets is a good friend of mine.
