Writing this first of the 1976-77 monthly series of 1933 class notes is made doubly difficult by the recent sudden death of Joan Hier, editor of class notes and obituaries for the magazine. Because of the friendship with Joan I have enjoyed and benefited from during the past three years as class secretary, I am deeply saddened by her loss. Her staff assistance was most generous and helpful, and she personalized her position with great enthusiasm.

Another sorry note is the resignation of ChetThomson as class agent, word of which came in a letter Bill Dewey wrote as president to 1933 class officers and executive committee members on August 30th: "Chet has labored hard and diligently for three years on a difficult and timeconsuming job. My thanks and, I am sure, yours also go to Chet." Bill is working toward the appointment of Chet's successor sometime this fall.

In spite of the great efforts by Chet and his entire team of agents, our final class results in the 62nd annual Alumni Fund campaign were rather disappointing. The number of contributors was approximately the same as last year, representing 70 percent participation, but we failed by $7,847 to meet our dollar objective of $55,000, and our total receipts were $3,095 less than last year. This represents a shrinkage of approximately $10 per contributor. We can do better than this, and I am sure that we will next year with the help of each of you.

Your class president Bill Dewey made a significant contribution on your behalf, to the college trustees through the Class Presidents Association and the Alumni Council. He presented the results of a poll he made of the class executive committee members in March 1976 regarding the admission policy affecting the male-female ratio at Dartmouth. The action taken by the Alumni Council in this connection at its meeting in Hanover, June 17-19 was reported in the July 1976 issue of "The Bulletin."

Even though previously reported in the June 1976 issue of the MAGAZINE and Bob Fox's newsletter of June 15, 1976, for the record I would like to add our best wishes to GeorgeTheriault upon his retirement June 30 from the College faculty after 40 years of outstanding service.

As a sequel to the class notes of October 1975, further congratulations are in order for JusStanley's assumption of the prestigious office of president of the American Bar Association for the coming year.

Word has been received that Horace Shaw retired as president and treasurer of the Burlington Savings Bank, Burlington, Vt., on August 1. He will continue to serve as a member of the bank's board of directors.

Jeff and Bea Davis spent from August 1 to September 15 at their summer home in Clinton, Conn., during which time they entertained their four children and ten grandchildren. Since then they have had an extended trip to Greece, Turkey, and Israel celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.

Alice Flaccus has sent a written reminder that some of Kimball's literary collection is at the Baker Memorial Library, including his Navy career papers and correspondence between him and various friends at Dartmouth, including expresident Hopkins.

The Alumni Records Office has confirmed a change of address for Mrs. Charles W. Tozier from Garden City, N.Y., to 1206 Norwich Circle, Sun City Center, Fla. 33570.

Watch for Bob Fox's newsletter coverage of the 1933 gathering after the Harvard game on October 16 at the Ho.el Coolidge, White River Jet., Vt. A supplementary report will be carried in this column in the December issue, the earliest issue possible because of publication schedules.

Jim McFarland, having devoted his entire business career to General Mills, Inc., and having served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer since November, 1969, will retire at age 65 on February 1, 1977. He will continue to serve on the boards of an impressive list of major corporations and will be able to devote some additional time to enjoying golf.

Also, those of you who are attending the Princeton game in Princeton on November 13th should advise Carl Rugen and plan to attend the '33 informal get-together before and after the game. This has proved very enjoyable in the past, thanks to Carl's efforts, and he will be pleased to have you join the group.

Because of an early rental of our house in Norwich, Vt., we plan to leave for Florida about November Ist, and my address-from November 1, 1976, to June 1, 1977, will be Box 160, Captiva, Fla. 33924 (telephone 813-472-2122). Do keep me posted of your latest developments and plans, and we will be happy to see any of you who are in Florida during the fall, winter, or spring.
