This month I thought that I would organize the news into various subject matter headings. In the congratulations department, first place goes to Terry and Polly Shumaker who now have a second son. His name is Daniel Edward and he was born on December 20 (6 lbs. 6½ oz.). In Terry's words he was "quite a Christmas present." Terry and Polly are in Annandale, Va., these days but hope to be back in New England after Terry completes his final year in the Army J.A.G. Corps, assisting three appellate judges on the Court of Military Review.
Terry's letter also included news of GregMosser's wedding on November 1 in Bennington, Vt., to Heidi Ann Spitler. I understand that it was quite an event and that Geoff Dyer drove all the way from Toronto immediately after finishing a bar exam in order to make it to the wedding. Other 70's who were in attendance included Greg Hemberger, Tim Welch, and Star Johnson.
The following two items are also of congratulatory nature but the reporting of them comes so long after the fact that I thought that they merited special mention. First is the news that Bruce Saylor has received a law degree from the University of Miami's school of law. Second is the fact that Randy McFarlane and Carolyn Zeul (William and Mary '70) were married last year in McLean, Va. Dartmouth 70's in attendance included Bob Rudney, EarlZubkoff, Tom English, Tom Walsh, Dennis, Marc and Jackie Jolicoeur. Yours truly arrived somewhat late after being unable to board several overcrowded trains, finally getting on one by reserving a parlor car seat only to have the train break down and eventually switching to yet another train which was further delayed. At any rate, Randy is now happily situated in the Office of the General Counsel of the Home Loan Bank Board in Washington, D.C., which regulates the savings and loan institutions ensuring against false appraisals, securities speculation, etc. Randy's job sometimes takes him around the country including brief trips to Miami, Seattle, and Puerto Rico. Carolyn has been concentrating on finishing her Ph.D. dissertation in sociology.
I waited with the report of Randy and Carolyn's marriage so that I could include a something about their recent trip to the Soviet Union which included stops in Leningrad, Tallinn, and Moscow (which I gather they liked in roughly that order). Highlights in Leningrad consisted of St. Isaac's, The Hermitage Museum, and the Kirov ballet troupe which they liked ever more than the Bolshoi. Those planning such a trip might give serious consideration to a visit to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, which I gather still retains something of a Hanseatic look with a continuing restoration of its medieval quarters.
In the apologies department, wires were somehow crossed and I erred in listing Chuck Thegze's prior West Coast job. Before accepting his current position as an associate editor with the Book of the Month Club in New York, Chuck worked in California with the LosAngeles Times and not with Variety as reported.
In the equal time department I promised that Chip O'Brien and Bob Payne would have a chance to set the record straight after including a clever tongue-in-cheek version of their activities prepared for us by one of their good friends. As it turns out, the proverb notwith-standing, fiction is stranger than fact. I was able to reach Chip and learned that he and Bob have both completed M.B.A.'s from the University of Chicago and are now in New York City where they are able to get together for a game of squash on occasion. Bob started with Blyth which became Blyth, Eastman, Dillon and is now with the First Boston Corp., an investment banking house, in the corporate finance end in which there has been a good deal of activity. Chip for his part has also been fortunate in his job experiences. He started in the multinational end of banking dealing with foreign exchange problems and the financing of U.S. overseas corporations. He is now working directly for the chairman of J.P. Morgan, helping with such diverse projects as the annual stockholder's meeting, New York City's financial problems, loan arrangements, etc. The job has provided Chip with a tremendous variety of tasks and early exposure to and respect for how a large, well-run corporation operates. Chip gives the New York City social life a good rating and invites friends to keep in touch and to help the city's economy while they are in town.
