The picture below appeared as a double-page spread on pages 24 and 25 of the December '76 issue. There are two rows of nine. Whip Walser '32 in his May column identified Joe Barrington and Chuck Adkins (fourth and eighth from left in the first row).

Chuck O'Neill as "begetter of the affair" has guessed: first row Ralph Maynard could be third or fifth, Rupe Brooke sixth, and Bob St. Louis seventh. Second row Hank Gorsline first, Johnny H. Chamberlin third, John Martin seventh, and Len Clark or Bill Seney ninth. Will other classmates complete the identifications?

Chuck writes: "Charlie Widmayer '30, as I remember, once told me in the early thirties that whether measured by clipping services or however, the shorts business had brought the College more publicity, for better or worse, than anything else on record, including the '25 football season, if not Webster's Dartmouth College case."

Fred Slaughter wrote last February 22: "Ruth and I are on the last leg of a 60-day frieghter trip which began January 2 in Houston, proceeding across the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic to Tunis, Algiers, Barcelona, Genoa, Leghorn, Split and Rijeka (Yugoslavia), Marseille, Valencia, and Cadiz. We are now on our third day en route home. This is our fourth such voyage on 12-passenger freighters, which we have found to be a delightful, casual, and often adventurous way to see new parts of our world."

Dick Holbrook wrote on April 20: "Every now and then a little chess rears its lovely head. For example, who do you think recently took home the trophy as 1977 Arizona Senior Reserve Chess Champion, with four wins, a draw, and no losses? All right, it's true that the tournament was limited to players over 50 years of age, and 'reserve' is a nice way of describing the second flight of players whose national rating is 'C' or below. If I'd played in the top section, I'd have been wiped out."

Bill Alton, a Christian Science lecturer and teacher, spoke at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Camden, Me., on May 19.

These two responses to John Cogswell's class dues notes were received too late for inclusion in the June issue: Hart Gilchrist: "Really not any news out here. I just keep on working, as it's most enjoyable and I seem to see many friends and clients that way." Art Hyman: "All is well, same wife, same house, same excellent health, same busy days, same interests, and. wouldn't change any of them."

Bill Wendell wrote in June: "Ruth and I are busy on the committee arranging for our high school reunion. We both graduated from Central High here in Bridgeport back in '27, so we'll be celebrating our 50th."

On July 26 June and Ori Hobbs left West Ossipee, N.H., for Rose and Hank McCarthy's house in Marblehead. From there all four taxied to Logan, flew to Kennedy, and then to Copenhagen. On July 29 they boarded the Royal Viking Sea for its North Cape Cruise into the fjords of Norway, visits to Bergen and Oslo, and sailing along the 1100-mile coastline past Molde, Oye, Geiranger, Andalsnes and Trondheim. Because Ori is president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota, June writes: "We probably won't get to anything in Hanover this fall because we have to go down to Florida early in October."

Bill Minehan writes: "Son Phil and I are going to be in Hanover for Alumni College on present schedule. He's just back from a year abroad in lieu of being a college freshman."

We sent out 25 letters and got some replies.

Sam Groves: "My affection for and interest in classmates has not changed. Life of old retiree not too exciting, and my contact with classmates largely in winter since Forsha Russell, JackMacKechnie, Si Leach, Bob Oelman, and a few others waltz around in my area of Florida off and on. Had a delightful two weeks in England late May and early June without going nearer to London than Heathrow. Much fishing and some golf during the summer from New England and Canada to Ohio."

Russ Beckwith: "A familiar refrain, 'Never busier since retired February 1, 1977!' In March to Marco Island, Fla., for two weeks and a great evening with John Benson, Dave Loveland, Bernie Boyle, Jim Purdy, and wives. Routed out Benson at 6:45 a.m. for golf, plus another golf session with Boyle and Benson, and a good bridge go with Dave and Alice in their Marco Island shore place.

"Sold my head hunting business to son Jim February 1. Selling our main house here to him and his wife Sidney. Renting this bungalow, our home, to a relative. Buying a condo in Riverbend, Tequesta, Fla., for seven months residence - the other five months in our new log cabin here on Owasco Lake adjacent to our annex for visiting grandchildren, four girls and one boy. Son Bill still in Zurich, Switzerland traveling Norway, Sweden with his computerleasing and trading corporation."
