Jack Benson wrote: "Gladys and I have already had three '31 reunions. We had drinks and dinner with Ernie and Angie Moore and Sher and Betty Guernsey. The arrival of the Boermeesters at Lovelands' on Marco Island was the occasion of a gathering which included the Boyles and the Purdys, as well as Marie Benger, who reciprocated with a party last evening for most of the same group."

Irv Bettman forwarded the following three items:

Abner Dean: "Who are all the worldtraveling grandparents I read about with fascination in the class news? I don't even know yet what I want to be when I grow up! W-H-W for now and the eighties."

Pete Peterson: "Janet and I are living the simple life in our retirement. Right now she is making a Christmas stocking for our fourth grandchild, Elizabeth. Have a wooden sailboat which gives me the questionable distinction of being the oldest yacht club member with (in this day of fiberglas) the " boat requiring the most work to get her into the water. To Bill Walker, John Boermeester, and Dave Kelley, it is the same craft I had a decade ago."

Jim Rice: "It's tough to live so far from the "Hub of the Universe" and miss so many good gatherings of the clan. That is the result of a very conscious choice of the place where I wanted to live, in the great Northwest, with its mountains, its year-round green forests and lawns, and all its beautiful waters. Recently I enjoyed a seven-day tour to Mazatlan with a group of 30 of my single friends. The weather was uniformly beautiful and hot; it hit 90° almost every day. We did a lot of shopping, including numerous trips to the mercado, where you do not pay the asking price for anything except food. We also had many interesting encounters with the street and beach salesmen. Being a four-time grandpa is most comforting and rewarding."

Red Gristede wrote: "Bob Frederick, incidentally, takes a dip in an indoor pool two or three times a week in order to keep in shape for the 50th reunion. Claims he runs into some nonsinkable mermaids at times, even when the pool isn't full of water?!" Red's second hip operation was scheduled for March 4 and he didn't think he'd make our May 5 class officers weekend He enclosed letters from:

Don and Doris Crane: "I hear you are planning the second hip job for 1980. Better wait until after February 6 so you can properly celebrate your 40th anniversary!"

Dutch and Doris Holland of Hilton Head Island: "We're still enjoying our life here on this lovely isle; play lots of golf, follow our hobbies, and try to keep up with the social activities, which is a job in itself, and I sometimes wonder if it's worth the effort."

Ernie and Angie Moore: "Life continues pleasantly on in this community (Zellwood, Fla.). And a happy note that finally Angie is able to swing a golf club again for the first time since last February. A good note from DutchHolland and the arrival in the next town of the Guernseys in a few days rekindles much of the past. Hope we will be able to have some minireunions here as we have had in past years."

Bob Tonis: "Tomorrow via bus to New Haven to watch Harvard beat Yale. The Yale team looks and acts like one of the teams in the NFL. Heading for Phoenix on November 30 for ten days. Would like to see Dick Holbrook but that may not be possible as he is now in Prescott, a long way from Phoenix. Will phone him anyway."

George Nickum, who chairs Nickum and Spaulding Associates of Seattle, was awarded the Coast Guard Public Service Commendation during ceremonies held at Coast Guard District Headquarters there on November 9. George was cited for his role as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Research Advisory Committee between 1974 and 1978.

Jack Weisert wrote: "In the ten years that I have been retired in France, my score on classmate visits, despite repeated invitations to all, has been exactly two. This counts Bob Ryan as a member of our class, which he officially was not, although he entered with us. I did have a great December 1971 meeting with Bob and Jessica when he was in Paris for six weeks or so making a picture for Rene Clair. In the summer of 1977, Red and Ceci Chamberlin included Ciboure/Saint-Jean-De-Luz on their French itinerary for four days, and we had a grand old time. We live in hope that 1980 will bring more '31ers. Naturally, both Ilona and I are aiming at Hanover for June 1981." Jack also sent along a photograph of himself, which is reproduced at the right.
