Apologies are in order for the lack of '57 representation in the alumni notes section of the January issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, a result of crossed wires between your inefficient secretary and one of his recently recruited class correspondents. Felicitations and thanks are due, however, to Mike Battles for his supreme literary effort in producing February's 1957 class notes. Mike made contact with every '57 in the Ohio area as the basis for his notes. Any of you Ohioans who responded too late to Mike's inquiry, please feel free to drop him or me a note at any time bringing us up to date on your recent activities.
Robert Goodman was one of the Ohio contingent whose response arrived after press time. Goodie wrote Mike that the "only reason I am writing is to prevent the rest of the Class from learning that you have no Dartmouth friends left in the entire state of Ohio." Bob related that he had returned to Hanover for the first time since the fall of '57 to witness the October '76 confrontation with Harvard at Memorial Field. He found it a marvelous experience to be on campus again and to have awakened so many fond memories of 20 years past. His most vivid impressions were of the improvement to the college scene generated by the cultural addition of Hopkins Center and the social presence of Dartmouth women.
Bob, a partner in the prestigious Cleveland law firm of Benasch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronaft, had the opportunity last summer to talk with other '57s practicing law: Tom Keller in Minneapolis and Monte Pascoe in Denver. He also frequently sees Byron Krantz who practices law in Cleveland. During a recent trip to Philadelphia, Bob had an opportunity to reminisce with Eric Eichler and spouse Patti while visiting with them at their farmhouse just outside the city.
Monte Pascoe is serving his second term as chairman of the Colorado Democratic Party. During his first term, in November 1974, Colorado Democrats swept into all but one of the state's high offices, won a second seat in the U.S. Senate, gained a seat in the U.S. House, and captured a majority of Colorado's State House. In November 1976, however, rival Republicans recaptured control of the Colorado House and managed to hold their Senate majority despite numerical vulnerability. The GOP also carried the state for its presidential ticket, kept its two seats in Congress, and narrowly missed adding one more.
Monte looks forward to the challenge of the 1978 elections, however, explaining the temporary setback as due to the Carter strategy of concentrating on the East and South, and to the controversial and politically courageous stands the Colorado Democratic Party took on several key issues.
Doug Schwartz, son of Tom Schwartz and Shirley, has achieved the coveted "early acceptance" status for the Dartmouth Class of 1981. Tom and Shirley are -justifiably proud and delighted although apparently still adjusting to the realization that they've attained the "maturity" to be able to have a child of college age.
Al Morrison recently won reappointment in the department of anthropology at SUNY College, Fredonia. In December, he presented a paper at the AAA Symposium on the subject: "Economics, Politics, and Trade in the Post-Contact New World."
A recent news flash concerning Ron Roth indicates that, although off to a late start, he is in the process of developing an instant family by marrying a young lady named Wanda and having a ten-year-old son.
Ron is currently producing a full-length T.V. show scheduled for presentation in mid-February with stars Susan Strasbourg, George Maharis, and Burgess Meridith. Ron says he is totally challenged every day - working with writers and actors - and really feels great!
Those of you who had an opportunity to be in Hanover during the Xmas season may have noticed the liberal sprinkling of Christmas trees throughout the town, the result of an effort by the Hanover Chamber of Commerce's Christmas Decoration Committee. You may not have realized, however, that the focal point of this endeavor, a 35-foot spruce erected on the center of campus in the middle of the College Green, came from the land of '57 classmate, Dr. R.Jackson Forcier of Norwich, Vt.
