Mike Tompkins, in charge of attendance for our 25th reunion, has totaled up the "plan to attend" responses to date and advises that over 200 '57s will "return to the source" this June. Just in case the very effective flow of mail and publicity have not yet inundated you, the class of 1957 is recognizing the 25th anniversary of its being graduated from Dartmouth College with appropriate ceremony and celebration June 17, 18, 19, and 20, 1982. As plans for this reunion develop, I have been fascinated with the scope and variety of opportunities that will be presented to us. Whether your interests run to computers, to discussions about lifestyle or economics, to athletic endeavors, or to a round of very pleasant social gatherings - or some combination thereof - there will be much to enjoy in Hanover this June. Please plan to join us! And include your entire family!
Arthur Pierce has added to the "draw" of reunion by generously extending to any classmates who may be cruising Down East an invitation to tie up to the guest mooring at the Isle of Springs. It is located in the mouth of the Sheepscot River, conveniently en route to Boothbay Harbor. Art's offer even includes the use of their hot showers (indoor or out) plus two doubles tennis courts - and "pot luck" supper with the Pierce family, assuming you might enjoy the catch of the day. Art's phone number is 207/633-2381. Here's hoping several of you take Art up on his offer.
Incidentally, as many of you know, Art is currently superintendent of schools in Brewer, Maine. He has recently made good press because, unlike many members of the "education establishment," he happens to agree with President Reagan's budget cuts in the educational field. And, having argued and written in opposition to the creation of the Department of Education, he "would be delighted to learn of its early demise!" Art adds that "the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution presumably reserved to the states or the people a variety of things - among them responsibility for public education."
Art will probably enjoy discussing these thoughts at reunion with our class's current top news generator, Marty Anderson. He continues to receive favorable press as a key adviser to President Reagan. I hope you all had an opportunity to read the article about Marty by David Shribman '76 that appeared in the December issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. A great photo, too, Marty! Tom Schwarz also included several articles concerning Marty in the most recent issue of our class newsletter.
Robert Adelizzi expects to attend the 25 th reunion. Bob and his wife Thomasine reside in Point Loma, Calif., with their three children. Last spring Bob was elected to the presidency of the Home Federal Savings and Loan Association of San Diego, the seventh largest savings and loan association in the nation with more than $4.4 billion in assets and 85 offices throughout the state of California. Bob has committed himself to the continued growth of his bank and to increasing the level of its services.
Another classmate looking forward to the 25th is Richard D. Mann of Walpole, Mass., who was recently elected to chair the Dean Junior College board of trustees. Dick has been a trustee of the college for 11 years. He is also a trustee of the Benjamin Franklin Savings Bank and is active in local civic affairs. We'll look forward to seeing Dick and Lois in Hanover this June.
So keep thinking 25th reunion, and take steps to ensure that you, too, will be "returning to the source" June 17-20.
