Last month's column left Ginger Cox and Tish Davis '78 floating somewhere in the waters between Seattle and Alaska. For those of you who failed to see the articles that probably appeared in your local newspapers, I'll satisfy your curiosity. On September 2, Ginger and Tish arrived in Skagway, nine days earlier than expected. Their appearance caused a major sensation in the small fishing town and so many people turned out to greet them that "they almost sunk the dock," according to Tish. After being presented with photos of the town, gifts, and complimentary meals and lodging by the mayor of Skagway, the two were off on a 33-mile hike up the Chilkoot Trail to Lake Bennett. Though Tish is back at Dartmouth now and Ginger is job-hunting, both have expressed interest in making another trip to the area someday soon. Our congratulations to Ginger! (I thought walking a block to my bus stop daily was an endurance test?)
I am so used to being stranded here in Georgia, far away from New England, that I forgot to report my own vacation to Connecticut this summer. Though a stop in Hanover was not part of our plans, Garth and I did manage to see plenty of Dartmouth friends. June 18 found us at the wedding of CraigWilliams and Annette L'Heureux. Jon Park, Jim Lloyd, and Larry Appel helped us put away the bubbly. Craig and Annette are now in Philadelphia where Craig is in his second year at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Next on the wedding tour was a stop in Philly for the wedding of George Eger and M.J. Erikson '79. We stayed with RandyDavis (Villanova Law School) and found JonoShuster was also a guest. Jono is still doing computer work in Washington, D.C., and his most recent project was in affiliation with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Tom Pell (Cornell Law School), Cam Clark (Dartmouth Medical School), and Ad Hewitt (working for a law firm in Washington, D.C.) were part of the wedding party. Other '77s at the reception included Brian McLaughlin and Mary E. Hendrickson, both of whom are careering in NYC, and Jeff Reynolds.
My only other bit of personal news is that late June provided us with the opportunity to have dinner here with Helena Sias. She is an account executive for an advertising firm with various television stations across the country as her clients. She travels extensively and loves her work. She reports that her NYC roommate, Betsy Roberts, is working for Morgan Guaranty Trust.
The wedding announcements are short and sweet this month: Bill Hammett wed Jane Erwin '78 on September 9 and Jim Darnell married Susan Cheslousky in August. Jim and Susan will be living in Dallas where Jim will be in his second year at SMU Law School. EllenMcLaughlin wed Bill Saturley on October 29 and the two will be living in Boston where they are studying.
Claiming that I misquote her (I call it editorial perogative!), Evy Chan has supplied me with her own biography: "Evy Chan is alive and well in Boston. After a year of working at a TV station, she has taken a part-time job in order to have more time to study music. Despite all rumors, she has never sung better, and is very excited about the whole process of studying music. She hopes to be at the New England Conservatory for a degree in voice performance in the fall of 1979, and also to keep studying piano with Gabriel Chodos."
Susana Elespuru wrote in July from her home in Lima, Peru. Between June and December 1977, she worked as an exploration geologist in the desert of Andalucia (Pyrenees). The beautiful scenery helped compensate for the tarantulas and scorpions that were also part of the job. Side-trips included camel-riding in Morocco and a stop in Toulouse, France, where she saw the Dartmouth FSA group. Back in the U.S., she met Jim Mahon who had been searching for silver in the San Juan mountains of Colorado. Jim and Susana used his '65 Dodge Dart to visit many Dartmouth friends including Carolynn Bush, who will be studying at the Gottingen University in Germany this year. They also saw Jonathan Farina, a business analyst in Keene, N.H. The next stop was Peru (in a Dodge Dart?) where water-skiing, fishing, and sunning was part of the daily grind. Jim is now at work in Creede, Colo. (pop. 600) and Susana is working as an advertising services supervisor for the market-research department of Proctor & Gamble of Peru.
Quick notes: Dede Granzow is working for U.S. Senator Johnston of Louisana. Bill Jarrett has completed his first year in the management training program with the Bank of N.Y. Thomas Mayer (once managing editor of TheD) wrote to say that he has quit his job as business writer for The Express in Eaton, Pa. He starts Harvard Law School this fall. Royce Yudk off will be at Harvard B-School, taking a leave of absence from Citibank. Jennifer Clarke is writing for a daily paper in Middletown, N.Y., and married Alan Moser Barstow '75 on August 19. John Donvan is now at a television station in Lewiston, Maine, as a reporteranchorman-talkshow host.
Those of you who still haven't seen your name in print, keep reading. Next issue, I promise!
