This has been an active fall for the Class of '54. Twenty of our classmates and their wives were guests of the College at a Horizons program the weekend of September 23. This program is designed to give an overview of current college life to a representative group of alumni. Dave Mandelbaum and Steve Mullins indicated that the weekend activities were enjoyed by all.

A large crowd of '54s returned to Hanover for the Yale weekend on October 13 and 14. The rain Friday night didn't dampen the spirits of the '54 contingent marching to Dartmouth Hall, nor did the cold, rainy Saturday afternoon cool the group watching Dartmouth beat Yale, nor did it keep the crowd away from the class cocktail party at Hopkins Center after the game. Among the many familiar faces seen at the game and the cocktail party were Charlie Morrison, George Voss, Don Berlin, Dick Barker, Pete Barker, Jerry Goldstein, Steve Mullins, Ed Murphy, Brad Borden, Bob Levine, Rich Lederer, Neal Sibley, Joe Mesics, Tony Kane, George McLaughlin, Dick Wright, Dave Mandelbaum, Bob Berry, Ed Winnick, Wayne Weil, Bob Adnopoz, Bob Kenney, Jim Love, Jack Christy, John Heston, Dick Page, Herb Hillman, Doc Dougherty, Jim Rill, and Dick Trowbridge.

The following week George and BettyMcLaughlin hosted all available '54s at a post- game cocktail party to mourn the Dartmouth loss to Harvard. By the time you read this, another group of '54 faithfuls will have been post-game guests of Stan and Betsy Rosenberg to wind up the season after the Princeton game.

It sounds like people are practicing their partying to be in shape for the reunion in June.

The College has just announced that JerryGoldstein has established a fund to endow a Distinguished Teacher Award at Dartmouth. The award is to be given annually to a regular member of the teaching faculty at Dartmouth in the ranks from instructor to full professor. The winner of the award will be selected in early May each academic year. This selection will be made by a committee composed of the full professors who hold endowed chairs at the College. The prize will consist of $1,000, half of which will be an outright gift to the winner and the remainder to be used in the ensuing academic year in his or her undergraduate teaching at Dartmouth. Jerry conceived the idea of the teaching award after reading an article, "The Prize Nobody Wins," written by Professor Noel Perrin in the June issue of the Dartmouth ALUMNI MAGAZINE

'54s have been well-represented in the halls of academia this fall. Dr. Lyon Greenberg represented Johns Hopkins University at the inauguration ceremonies of Elizabeth Kennan as president of Mount Holyoke College. Dr. Frank Weiser was suitably attired in his academic gown at the graduation ceremonies at Marymount-Manhattan College where Frank is a member of the Board of Trustees. Frank is one of three Dartmouth alumni on the board, the other two being Lou Miano and Alan Murray of the Class of '55.

Barry Nova continues his climb up the corporate ladder at U.S. Tobacco. Barry, who joined U.S. Tobacco in 1974, has been appointed senior vice president-marketing/sales, a newly created post. Barry is also a member of the board of directors of U.S. Tobacco.

As ski season approaches, it's time to catch up with our skiing entrepreneurs. Mead Metcalf continues to get rave notices for a super production of dinner shows at the Crystal Palace in Aspen. Tom Corcoran, Waterville Valley, continues unabated growth - it's unquestionably the most complete ski resort in the East. Herb Hillman leads the Stowe Area Association as its president, while continuing the growth of his Golden Eagle Motor Inn complex on the mountain access road. Jim Adams's Crested Butte resort is getting growing publicity as the future great-growth area for western skiing. So take your choice. It looks like you can give your ski business to a friendly *54 no matter where you want to ski in the country.

If you wonder who's sending out all those reunion notices focusing your attention on the 25th reunion, you need look no further than Dick Page. Dick, serving as a mouthpiece for the rest of the reunion committee, JohnGillespie and Pete Barker, is responsible to find new ways of telling you that the great year of the '54 25th reunion is at hand. The most current Page release is as follows:

"The cards are rolling in! It's hard to believe, but only one week after we hit the streets with our preliminary registration cards we've had 108 replies. The really good news is that 76 classmates are definitely coming to the reunion, 28 are hopeful, and only six can't make it. That's the kind of response that indicates a record turnout and a good time for all.

"For those of you who haven't responded, it's time to get going. We need to know your plans to make our plans. And when it comes to hat sizes, let's have no more answers like JerryBarton's 23 inches. Thank heavens for my L.L. Bean catalogue which translates that elliptical reply as 7 and 3/8.

"While we're on the subject of what you should be doing, just where are all those questionnaires you guys are supposed to be sending to Bill White for the reunion class book? Realizing how wisely you apportion your time, let me pose the following most convincing arguments as to why you should get yours in the mail today: first, the book is free (I knew that would be of interest); second, it will arrive on your doorstep before reunion and serve as a great background for renewing old friendships; and third, if you do what Bill has asked and really reflect on the last 25 years and what has been important to you since graduation, we'll all have something to treasure for years to come. But only if you do your part. If you have lost your questionnaire, all you have to do to get another is contact Bill White, 1700 State Highway 3, Clifton, N.J. 07013 (201-773-9300), and the replacement will arrive by return mail. The deadline is December 15, but if we know you're serious and are working on it, we can reserve space until January I. Why not save us all that trouble and do it today. If you don't, there's a good chance we'll call your wife to complain!

"Since the last mailing, we have some additional freebies to list for the June '79 festivities: our very own marching band for the reunion parade, DOC trips up and down numerous hills and dales, and special gatherings for Tuck, Thayer and Medical School grads. And more, more, more!

"Remember, the best holiday season gift you can give your family is reunion weekend in Hanover. We hope to see you there."
