You who have visited "Oak Knoll" in Winchester, Mass., the home of Dick and KayParkhurst, will be interested to know that this house was one of the residences in Winchester researched during a historical home survey. A certificate of the documentation of the history of the structure was presented to Dick in July. The builder of this house was Lewis Parkhurst, class of 1878, Dick's father and an ardent Dartmouth graduate who spent many years in education, first as principal of several schools in Massachusetts and later as partner in the educational publishing house of Ginn and Company. As he had served as principal of Winchester High School, he selected that city in 1892 to build his home that he named "Oak Knoll." Mr. Parkhurst's interest in Dartmouth was almost perpetual. He served on the board of trustees for 33 years, and in 1910 he made a gift to Dartmouth of Parkhurst Hall in memory of his son of the class of 1907.
John Ames passes along a bit of information about Richard Stillman '77, grandson of our late classmate Dewitt Stillman. Richard graduated from Dartmouth with a major in drama and now devotes his life to the theatrical and entertainment field. Those who attended the June 1977 Hanover Holiday (post-50th reunion) had Richard as the entertainer and found him not only a top performer but also the kind that one often searches for when attempting to fill out a program for the many community affairs that become one's responsibility.
Your secretary has been taken in "hook, line, and sinker" by an item that appeared in the September 21 issue of The Dartmouth. When I read on the editorial page the headline "Big Green mind control" and the first paragraph, I accepted as fact that Dartmouth College was being sued by an irate parent for the alienation of his daughter by the Dartmouth spirit, which he described as "a fanatical religious cult." It seems that he had received only one visit from his daughter since she left for Dartmouth. The article went on to say that a suit was to be filed with the Superior Court of New Hampshire by her father, Mr. Bronks. Gullible me! I wrote to the clerk of the Superior Court of New Hampshire, asking for the number of the case. Back came a letter stating, "Found no pending action against Dartmouth College - also checked the United States District Court and the Grafton County Superior Court and they have no knowledge." So here I am flopping around in the creel of The Dartmouth editors, who have landed another sucker.
To all of you, the best for this year's holiday season and the joy of reliving the joys of the many past holidays. And may the new year bring you hopeful joy and the best of health that can be expected at our ages.
