Let me continue where I left off with the rest of the attendees at the mini-reunion. Bill andJeanne Boynton journeyed from Holyoke, where Bill teaches during the "off season." His true love is the restaurant that he and Jeanne run in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. They took over the "Blue Ship" four years ago and have developed it into a successful eatery. So if any of you find yourselves in Maine next summer, stop in and try some great Down East cooking.
Joe Holton and Cathy, his bride of five months, were also in attendance. Joe, who makes his home in Seattle, had not been back to Hanover since graduation. Joe operates his own business - the manufacture and distribution of corrugated containers, and he has three children - two in Washington and a son who is a student at Skidmore.
A man who finds change abhorrent is NelsBellesheim. Nels has been with Otis Elevator since graduation, and there are not many who can top that. Presently, Nels is manager of all special applications of elevators, escalators, stage lifts, etc. He and wife Betty still reside in Paramus, which has been home for more years than they can remember. Three of their five children are married and they have two grandchildren. Nels has served on the Paramus board of education for 12 years.
To complete the group, there was Al Sweet, an engineer at Raytheon, and his wife Wilda; Dave Batchelder, a builder in Connecticut; Joeand Marci Caldwell, plus two children; RussDilks, who left his Western Electric lawyering for a few days; and - last but not least - our peerless president and his charming bride.
My midwestern correspondent has come through again. Pete Henderson has sent a rather complete report of the '15 happenings in the Chicago area. The Winnetka delegation was visited in August by Al and Dotty Mori and Bob and Judy Larigan, who had been touring the far West and stopped off on their way home. Jim and Elaine Bovaird chaired the welcoming committee that included Dave andGinny Hilton, Reed and Mary Badgely, Johnand Ruth Ann Southworth, and Fred and JaneChandler, plus the Hendersons. An interesting comment by Pete: "In contrast to a few years ago, when the central conversational theme would have been growing families and new jobs, I was interested to hear quite a lot of talk about retirement plans." Another visitor over the summer was Art Worden and family. Years ago, Art outfitted a bus for family trips and has driven it over 80,000 miles. The Wordens were on their way home from an 8,000-mile tour of the West.
Further news from Pete: "Earlier this summer, 'sls addressed two gatherings of Chicago alumni. Frank and Ann Smallwood came through town as part of a series of stops in major cities for the College. We were well-represented in the audience - a new face in the crowd was Bing Broido, here to head up LaSalle Extension University. Berl Bernhard reported for the trustees to another gathering. He was introduced by Jeff O'Connell, who drove in from Champaign for the event. Great to see both of them."
As for Pete and Jean, they are rattling around in the house with five off to college - Dartmouth, Colgate, Boston University, Arizona State, and the University of Illinois Medical School. Down to the last two highschoolers. "Obviously, we have lots of room for visiting '51s." Pete, my thanks for this complete report.
Jim and Dorie Balderston have left the idyllic midwestern life for the West Coast. Jim is heading Searle's ultrasonic division and now lives in Portola Valley, Calif.
Have a happy holiday. So long for now.
