Let's hope the winter is well behind us by now. June and I were fortunate to be in Florida during the severe weather that hit Chicago, and we feel sorry for those who had to endure the cold and snow.
I have a few notes that Ed Brown sent me. Ted Germann wrote in November, "It's particularly beautiful down here in the Blue Ridge at this time of year - even more so for me in my newly-wedded bliss. Last June 20 I married in Charlottesville the former Margaret Claiborne Moquin, who raised a family of eight, divorced, then came up from Alabama to University of Virginia, where she is working on her M.S. in psychiatric and mental health nursing. While she does that, I have assumed the quite 'with it' role of house-husband. That is lots more fun than keeping house just for yourself, as I did for six years. We are looking forward to getting our respective families together for a grand reunion some day - seven sons and six daughters (eight couples) and nine grandchildren. Know where I can rent a big tent cheap? P.S. I should have made it clear at the beginning that - Virginia is for lovers!' Wow, Ted, you really came through with flying colors. Why not treat your whole clan to our class reunion in June?
A note from Dick Campen also in November told of just returning from three weeks in Ireland "searching for our 'roots.' Learned that chances would have been better were our name spelled 'Campion.' " Dick is in Florida through March at 174 Southwind Drive, Sanibel 33957.
Don Allen joined the retired list on September 1 and is still adjusting "happily."
John Anderson, who is always one of the busiest guys I know, has just received another honor. As you will recall from a previous column, John was elected president of the University School Alumni Association. Well, he has now been elected to the selective committee of the Athletic Hall of Fame of Case Western Reserve University. He is one of twenty members, including Hal Lebovitz, sports editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Gordon McCarter, a well-known NFL referee. John attended Case before going to Dartmouth and wrote the official fight song, "Fight on, Case Reserve." You really get wrapped up in extracurricular activities, John, and we'll still call on you to play your new song at reunion, to be accompanied by Jack Gilbert and Bill Scherman. Thanks for your fine letter.
Had another plea from our reunion chair, Bill Wilson. Please let him know whether or not you will be at reunion right away. He would like to know how many of your family will be coming with you. Thanks.
Dick Wells was honored on his retirement as vice president of sales, Minnesota Rubber Company. He had been with the company 27 years. The party in his honor was held at Pebble Beach, Calif. At the dinner, Dick's wife was presented with a copy of the football photo of Dick at Dartmouth. They presented Dick with a heavy Dartmouth warm-up jacket personalized with '34 on the left chest and number 11 under Dartmouth on the back. He received a T-shirt, a Dartmouth songbook, and recordings of the Glee Club. It just seems to me, Dick, that somewhere along the line in those 27 years, you must have leaked the information that you had gone to Dartmouth! Congratulations, and welcome to the Club. See you in Hanover in June.
I have tried to get in touch with George andGisel Collins but haven't been successful as yet.
Also haven't tracked down Nick Nanos, but since Juno Beach is pretty small, I'm sure I'll find him while we are here. Usually about now Fred Robbe arrives from up north and he finds Nick right away, so I'm still hopeful.
Don't forget to make all your plans for June 11-14. Talk up the reunion with any classmates you see or hear from, because we'll only have one 45th and no one should miss it!
