Class of 1917 news is as scarce as snow is in these hills of the New England states. It is frustrating for your secretary and newsletter editor (the two-in-one variety) to find enough news to divide between the ALUMNI MAGAZINE and the newsletter, for, if my mathematics is correct, zero divided by zero is still zero. Of course computers may have changed that, as they sometimes do with all kinds of bills. As Nancy Elliott, secretary of the newsletter association, puts it in writing: "I will soon be contacting those classes which have failed to produce a letter this year, and I shall also be contacting class presidents of the delinquent classes. Do not let YOUR name be on my black list!" Help keep your secretary off that list and send in news either good or sad as often as possible.
We have learned of two more deaths in our sadly dwindling class. Ruth Colby wrote that Carl had passed away on December 1, 1979. Barney Thielscher called me one night to tell me of the death of Ralph Lynch that morning, January 25. Both of these men succumbed only after long illnesses. We shall miss them. Their obituaries will appear in this or a later issue.
Some dates to keep in mind for next autumn. October 10-12, unusual weekend at Williamsburg with the game with William and Mary, tours, and lectures. October 18 is the date for the Dartmouth-Harvard game and Dartmouth Night, with a salute to 100 years of Dartmouth football. There will also be the luncheon for the classes of 1917, 1918, and 1919, probably on November 1. That date is not certain, but you will be informed when details have been set with the Hanover Inn.
If all goes well and your secretary survives, another "Sentry" will be out as soon as possible. Keep well and send us some snow.
