One of the great rewards of my new-found duty as class secretary is the opportunity to personally renew old acquaintanceships. Upon receipt of a message, the fun begins with a visit to the Aegis (yup, that's him), to the 25th reunion yearbook for more current data, then to the musty files that carry bits and pieces about each of us gleaned from the past four decades. It is interesting to relate the past to the present with the interceding progression of events. Hopefully, I can transmit the same pleasure and rewards to you through the column, and in return you will keep your notes and letters coming to be shared in forthcoming issues.
Forty's 40th will have a serious moment or two, one of those being a class meeting and the election of officers. In this regard, Bill Squier wrote: "The time is now to think of who will be your class leaders for at least the next five years. That decision will be finalized at our 40th. Officers in consideration are president, secretary, treasurer, class agent, newsletter editor, and bequest chairman. You are encouraged to submit names now, and are assured that they will be given due consideration by your nominating committee." Send your nominatives to Bill Squier, 9 Clovelly Road, Wellesley Hills, Mass. 02181. Your suggestions are eagerly awaited.
With the Campaign for Dartmouth approaching two-thirds of its $160 million goal, no small part of the credit for its success to date can be attributed to several '40s contributing to its leadership. Dick Everett chairs the Atlanta region, Sid Harrington the Springfield, Mass region, and Mac McAllister the Raleigh" Durham region. Also chairing their regions are Will Pitz in Milwaukee, Jim Scott in Syracuse and Gordy Wentworth on Cape Cod. Of course working to fill the same pot insuring Dartmouth's future is Art Ostrander and his stalwart bunch of dedicated class agents. If you haven't already, seal and post your pledge today.
Bill Huffman's modesty was showing when we had to learn from one of his friends of his election as president of the Lakewood Hospital medical staff for 1980-81. Lakewood Hospital serves the western suburbs of Cleveland and is a 400-bed facility with a staff of over 250 medics. Bill, following in his father's footsteps at Lakewood, has been a member of the staff since 1949 and was certified by the American Board of Urology in 1952. Over the years, he has been involved in a wide variety of medical staff com mittees and the patient care committee. In addition to serving as vice president of the staff in 1979, Bill served on the executive, joint conference, and medical records committees. A tip of our battered chapeau, Bill, for your achievements.
Ken Atkins reported from his McLean, Va,, hustings about having had lunches with both Raclin and Babcock when in Chicago late last year. This past January, Ken joined Mark Silber Associates as a limited partner and vice president, continuing his consulting work with hospitals and health care agencies.
Home for Tom Ballantyne is 440 West 44th Street, New York City 10036. He has just completed conversion of a vacant brownstone into four co-ops, retaining one for himself. Tom is still playing squash regularly, but claims his "reflexes are about like Max Schmeling's after Joe Louis worked him over in their second fight."
Reporting in from Riverside, Calif., was Hi Belding, recovering from a coronary occlusion suffered late last year. Hi is easing his way back into his surgical practice, and furthermore is making plans to be in Hanover for the June 9-12 happening with his "new" wife of seven years and four-year-old son.
Via this column comes another reminder from your committee to .mail your reunion reservations and golf and/or tennis cards in early. Act now, if you haven't done so already, to insure better planning-and a better-coordinated event. It won't be long now!
Until next month . . .
