The publicity given to Dr. John Porvaznik and Dan Musser in this column recently has obviously helped them earn even wider recognition. John, who has been serving Indian tribes in the Southwest, was recently the recipient of the Health Systems Award presented by the Navajo Health Systems Agency. He was nominated for his "outstanding achievements and contributions during the past 17 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service, serving in several locations on the Navajo reservation as physician and administrator." Further details of John's outstanding career will appear in a future newsletter.
Following our lead in naming Dan as the class innkeeper, the American Hotel and Motel Association's 7,600 members recognized him as resort executive of the year at the association's convention in Washington, D.C. The award "is based on management ability, community and professional leadership, and concern with staff development and for the environment." Having worked for Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Mich., for 29 years as general manager, president, and, in 1979, owner, Dan was quoted as saying, "There's nothing else I'd ever want to do. This is my way of life now."
Ted Hawkins has been elected a vice presi- dent of Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, Inc., where he is an ac- count supervisor in the New York office of this well known ad- vertising agency. Prior to joining the firm ten years ago, Ted worked for a number of other advertising agencies. He now lives in Bronxville, N.Y., with his wife and three daughters. If he practiced what he preached we would have heard more about his activities over these past 25 years.
Continuing with other '55s who are making news, I'm happy to report Herb Gramm has been selected for fellowship in the American College of Radiology, in honor of his special contributions to the medical profession. He received his award during the annual meeting of the A.C.R. in New Orelans late last year. This professional society represents 17,000 physicians who specialize in the use of radiation and ultrasound to diagnose and treat human disease. Herb is affiliated with the New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston.
Belated congratulations to Don Hummel who was named vice president and head of eastern division 111 in the banking department at the Northern Trust Company in Chicago. He has been affiliated with Northern Trust since 1957 and is active in the community as trustee of his church and the executive committee of the regional Boy Scout council. Dan and his wife Carolyn live in Kenilworth with their three daughters.
After having successfully co-produced '55Out, Jim Perkins was obviously looking for something new to conquer. As detailed in a recent Wall Street Journal article, Jim now produces "The Home Shopping Show," a halfhour cable television program out of Chicago which consists of solid advertising. The idea, he says, is to give advertisers more time to explain their products than is allowed in 30- or 60second commercials. According to the article, the show has done very well so far, is the cable system's most recognized program, and the ratings are on the way up.
Another mid-western '55 with previous WallStreet Journal exposure is Tom Roulston, who we know as the owner of his own investment company. Tom's latest venture is refurbishing the University Club in Cleveland and restoring this ancient mansion into an elegant socialbusiness-athletic facility. I am sure that if you are traveling through Cleveland and looking for a game of squash, you most likely would be able to find some court time there.
And finally, Gus Aberle, who runs Tom's London office, has been named Dartmouth Club President of the Year.
In this business no news is bad so please keep me posted. Remember, this column should not be restricted to success stories.
