Congratulations are due to Bob Norton and, of course, Ginger and their daughter, Katie. On September 6, 1985, Ginger gave birth to James Brendan Norton at nine pounds and five and a half ounces. From the initial weigh-in, it sounds like young James is following in his father's footsteps.
Likewise, Bill Fitzharris and his wife, Martha, celebrated the birth of their daughter, Colleen, on July 13, 1985. Martha is a Cornell graduate, so Bill and she have decided to let the outcome of this year's Dartmouth-Cornell game decide where Colleen is going to go to college. If things don't improve, Colleen could be spending four years in Ithaca.

Congratulations of a different kind are in order for Bernie Strauss. Bernie was
elected a partner at Barham and Churchill, a law firm in New Orleans which specializes in maritime law and personal injury work.
I recently received a great letter from Derek Crandall, who is currently president of the American Recreation Coalition in Washington, D.C. The coalition is a non-profit federation of recreation companies and organizations, ranging from the American Youth Hostels to Disney. Their focus is national policies which influence recreation opportunities. Derek explains that "in short, we're one of Washington's special interest lobbies albeit for a great cause!" In recent years he has arranged and hosted camping/fishing/hiking trips for Vice President Bush in Glacier National Park; the President's visit to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky; and trips for VlP's from Interior Secretary Don Hodel (off-road bicycling) to senators (hiking and white-water rafting). Recently, Derek was appointed by President Reagan to his new President's Commission on Americans Outdoors. His fellow commissioners include the governor of Tennessee, two United States senators, two U.S. Representatives, the president of the National Geographic Society, and several prominent individuals from corporate America. On the homefront, Luayne and Derek recently marked their 10th anniversary and have two daughters, Alysson (four and a half) and Carolyn (one year).
Finally, it is with great regret that I must report the death of our classmate, Art Goldsher, on September 7, 1985. Art was living in West Hollywood, Calif., at the time and died after a long illness. After Dartmouth, Art earned his master's degree in English at the University of Virginia. He then went on to do doctoral work at the University of Illinois until 1977. He was active as a writer in California at the time of his death. The class of 1973 has lost a good friend and a loyal son of Dartmouth. I know that all of you join me in sending our condolences to his family.
