News of classmates is now exceedingly meager. News of the problems of the College, some good, some bad, is being spread nationwide. The most concise news comes directly from the President and from the Trustees in letters you all have received and which, by the time this is read, will be very old hat and I believe or hope will be peacefully solved to the advantage of all factions. Time magazine had a fairly good full-page article early in February. It is worth reading. Incidentally, these problems are not indigenous to Dartmouth. Two hundred Smith students seized a building, and Amy Carter and about 100 Brown students occupied a building while urging the sale of equities in South Africa. It is my belief after doing some research that such withdrawal would absolutely ruin the economy of South Africa. It is not all black and white. It is two whites, the Boers (farmers) and English (bankers), against about 12 different tribes of blacks who do not all agree among themselves.
Items'. Good news from Howard A1-corn, Esq., retired chief justice of the Supreme Court of Connecticut. Howie just celebrated with Bird their 58th wedding anniversary, and they get about as well as age will allow. He sat in the Dartmouth stands with eight relatives including a Dartmouth sophomore grandson. BettyLandauer writes about the Landauer business. She is very proud of him, and we should be too. Dick Udall writes from Florida that 89 classmates have paid their class dues and that as of about December 30 third notices have gone out to about 20 more. Chet and Barbara Bixby survived a two-week trip to Hawaii with a nurse in attendance. Chet is quite well. Barbara has her problems. Connie Dodge was honored again for her alumni gifts program and awarded the Laurence Leavitt '25 Memorial Gifts Chairman Award (full details in "Skidoo").
Many of us are now situated in living care institutions. Nat Harmon is in Glendale. Bee and I are in North Hill, Needham. Clarence Goss is in Camden, Conn (Drop me a note, and I may be able to complete a list.) After a month of Hills- boro Club, Pete Jones asked Bee and me out to Hopetown in the Bahamas. Pete is a very gracious host, and we thoroughly enjoyed his hospitality.
By the time you see this in print, we hope there will have been a mini-reunion May 2-3, Class Officers Weekend. We will get the details later. Would anyone like a modest 65th? Also drop me a card or letter with suggestions. And I need green cards or letters with your news.
