Let's try, however ineffectively, to remember where we are or where we're supposed to be.

We're into April. Right? It's IRS tax time. What do you mean about "simplifi- cation?" I'm confused and frightened but what's good for H. & R. Block must be good for all the CPAs. But who else?

GRAPEVINE REPORTS

Didn't some of these "reports" exist a few decades ago? Guess what. They still do! Two samples follow.

Item the first. The daughter of Bill Sullivan, Betsy '82, writes that she and Doug Latham '82 are the proud parents of the first grandchild for Liz and Bill. The little fella is Alexandar Macintosh and probably will date Miss America at winter carnival in "aught-four" when the center-of-campus ice sculpture will be a 500-foot high Cuban cigar. Or maybe you don't believe Fidel will be out of power by then? Could happen!

Nev Chamberlain sent a report in December that Nob Hovde had an ordeal with perforation of the colon a month earlier, during a trip to Russia already! No way I'm going to make light of or trivialize on the problem. Comments on two other parts of the message? Sure "Nob is one of our most creative 'mates.' " You gottit, Nev. "We don't see him often at

Class affairs." Why not, Nob? You pay your dues, don't you?

GIANTS

No, we're not talking the Super Bowl Champs.

Do you remember Giants in the Earth by Ole Rolvaag? If so, you're my roomie who had Edith Clever for sophomore English ... in high school . . . and hated it. A bunch of displaced Vikings in mud huts in the Dakotas. But that's history. Which is where another roomie in that part of the world is devoting his time and efforts.

Ken Rothchild has been elected (commandeered? cajoled?) prez of the MinneGopher Historical Society for the next three years. The Rock also has been on the Minnesota State University System board of directors, where he helped select a chancellor and six college presidents. Any chance we'd like to pirate one of them for Hanover?

Kids for Ken and Nina (Minnesota Commissioner of Employee Relations, meaning she has to negotiate with more than a baker's dozen unions representing 40,000-plus workers) are Ken Jr., a theater designer and instructor at Bennington College; Mary, an assistant vice president with Irving Trust; and Sally, who is a potter and pottery teacher. All three live in New York.

Myriad extracurricular activities should be tallied but we'll conclude with Ken's noting that he's "keeping track of ArnieBockstruck, who was named Boss of the Year for '86." That would be for the Twin Cities, not the whole U.S. of A., I guess. Arnie and Jessie are parents of Betsy and Robert, but none of them has been at reunion of late. Maybe next time?

THOUGHT

Has it occured to anyone that while the answers keep changing the question remains the same?

MONEY MAN

A long story from Rochester, N.Y., talks a lot about Bill Balderston, president and CEO of Chase Lincoln First Bank, N.A. Bill joined the predecessor organization in 1966 as director of marketing and was exiled to Syracuse for five years as chairman of the bank's affiliate there. Back to Kodakville in 1978, where Bill and Ruth reside at 3500 Elmwood Avenue (zip 14610). Offspring include William (Ashland College), David (Dartmouth '76), and Peter and Mary, both St. Lawrence.

MAD MAN

We gave Walt Lindenthal a bum rap here a few months ago. He is not resuscitating our financial recommendations. "I learned that I was providing the stock for those that bought low and sold high." Well, somebody's got to do it!

Rose Mary and Thai can't get back to Meredith, N.H., as often as they'd like since Houston is not exactly next door. Their children include Jim, in the computer consulting business in Boston; Mary Beth, a mother and business woman in Concord, Mass.; Kathryn, who's a currency trader in the Big Apple; and John, who is in med school at Texas Tech.

And that empties the mail bag. If any inane info comes in during the next month, we'll get back to you in May. If not, maybe in June. So for now, 'bye.
