Last May 29, at its eighty-first commencement, the College of New Rochelle conferred on the Hon. Fritz W. Alexander II '47, left, the honorary degree of doctor of laws to mark his long career of effective public service as a jurist and administrator with special emphasis on his defense of the rights of the underprivileged and his concern for individual liberties. Judge Alexander was appointed an associate justice of New York's highest court, the Court of Appeals, by Governor Cuomo in 1985. A graduate of N.Y.U.'s law school, Fritz has a continuing interest in Dartmouth; he's a founding member and past president of the Black Alumni Association. At right is the chairman of New Rochelle's board of trustees, James J. Nicholson '48. During a 30-year career with CPC International Jim has devoted much of his free time to the College of New Rochelle, a private, nonsectarian liberal arts institution just north of New York City, which also includes a nontraditional School of New Resources. This division provides inner-city night courses for 2,700 students, many of whom are immigrants, women, and representatives of minorities-with an average age exceeding 35. A tip of the mortarboard to both Fritz and Jim.
