Greetings from Atlanta! This month I have some news from news releases, some from letters, and some from my continuing telephone campaign. In terms of news releases, notice of Jeff Immelt's promotion to vice president of General Electric appeared in The Wall Street Journal. It was notable that the others named in the release were all at least ten Sears older. Maybe Jeff's promotion was elped by his quote in Business Week last year talking about a new tough-minded approach to management at GE. Basically, Jeff said, that if you can't stand the heat you should get out of the kitchen. Go get 'em, Jeff! It could also be that they had to make Jeff a VP to get him to live in Louisville and manufacture washing machines and refrigerators. We also have a senior vice president in our class. Marianne Bond Price was recently named an SVP of First Wachovia, a major regional bank headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., and Atlanta. Marianne has been able to move up the corporate ladder while enjoying an attractive lifestyle. She owns and trains several horses on the farm she and her husband, Bob Price, own outside Winston-Salem.
I also received a note from Jeff Krolik announcing the birth of his son, John, in January. Jeff is living in Fort Lauderdale, where he is a vice president of affiliate relations for HBO. He works with cable operators to try to increase the number of HBO subscribers. This requires a lot of arduous work such as fishing trips and golf outings. However, Jeff is taking fatherhood so seriously that he gave up his spot at the Super Bowl so he could be home since John was due at that time. Don't tell Reggie Williams you skipped the game! Kent Pierce and his wife, Kristen Funkhouser, must have thought kids looked like fun, because they are expecting a child in the fall. I am sure their new addition will enjoy the Southern California lifestyle in Santa Monica.
Jeff also passed on word of Peter Endicott, who has recently completed MlT's master's program in real estate. Jeff was not sure of Peter's job plans after MIT, but he must have something good in mind because Peter's wife, Carola, is also expecting. Another '78 in Florida is Rick Sunshine, who is running Dawes Investment Service, a leading money management firm in the Palm Beach area.
Jeff also reported on the whereabouts of N.Brooks Clark. Brooks made the move from Sports Illustrated to Whittle Communications, thinking he was leaving massive Time Inc. behind in Manhattan. Shortly after Brooks joined Whittle it was acquired by Time. Everyone must agree that Whittle is a great company! Whittle has been in the news lately because its "educational" news videos for schools include commercial advertising.
The current telephone strike has made it more difficult to track you down by phone, but the lines to Abilene, Tex., were clear. I woke up Miles LeBlanc, who was taking a catnap before heading back to his office to prepare a case for court. Miles is an assistant district attorney in Abilene, 200 miles west of Dallas. After Dartmouth, Miles earned his law degree at Harvard and then was in private practice in Houston. He's enjoying Abilene (if that is possible during its incredibly hot summers) and the steady exposure to trial work he gets as a DA. Miles ad news from Jan Lemon, who is now starting her second year of Harvard Law School. Jan has previously earned a master of education degree from Harvard, and worked for several years in Cincinnati. It takes a strength of will to start law school now. Good luck, Jan!
I also talked with Peter Bundschuh, in Hollis, N.H. Peter and his wife, Lex BondBundschuh, are enjoying their 2 1/2-year- old son, John, and have taken advantage of their New England location to get involved in the sport of orienteering. Lex recently returned from a trip to Scotland for a competition, and last year they went to a competition in Sweden.
Well, that's the news. Send more!
