Greetings from Atlanta! Actually I am sitting in a hotel in Orlando, Fla. I have switched jobs and am now working in the Atlanta office of Prudential Realty Group, buying and selling institutional real estate. One obvious benefit of this job is travel to vacation spots like Orlando, the location of Walt Disney World, Sea World, Flea World, and numerous other worlds. What a trip!
This month I have news forwarded to me from The New York Times by a fellow secretary, Os Skinner '2B [whose sudden death is reported elsewhere in this issue—Ed.]. The March 12 marriage of Elissa Von Heill was reported. Elissa married George Hylton, a partner at the law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York. Elissa is a vice president and senior associate counsel at Chase Manhattan Bank. Moreau Brown, of the class of '39, sent along news of PeterRichardson, who was appointed to the position of director of admissions for St. Lawrence University. Peter's appointment follows four successful years as admissions director of Bennington. Despite the fact that Bennington is the most expensive college in the country, Peter increased applications 50 percent. I hope President Freedman will not draft Peter to get more class valedictorians and fewer well rounded people to Dartmouth.
The mail was interesting but was not sufficient to fill a column. So I resorted to making late-night phone calls from my Orlando hotel to the West Coast. Bill Woods was clearly in a bad mood when I reached him in Palo Alto. The mail list says he is attending Stanford, but he refused to tell me anything about what he is doing there. Anyone who knows what Bill is doing is invited to write me and I will publish the sordid details. I called Dr. Jim Vailas's service in Inglewood, Calif., and they denied any knowledge of his existence. KennethTucker said his work was too complicated to explain but he did tell me about the rest of his life. He recently bought a condo in Long Beach and tools around southern California in a Mazda 626 turbo. Ken also sees Mark Jacobson, who is working in software design for Hughes Aircraft.
I spoke to Franca Taylor's answering machine in Aptos, Calif. I am not sure where Aptos is, but it must be near Beverly Hills, because Franca is running a pet-care service. Lauren Tanny's San Francisco number was disconnected. Dean Stephens's answering machine in Seattle gave me a daytime number in Olympia. It did not say what he is doing. Tobey Simpson is working for the Los Angeles Times but his answering machine did not provide details.
Patty Zikes Shemkus was home in Eugene, Ore. Patty is a sales manager for North Coast Electric, selling electricity to industrial users. Her husband, Pete, is a letter carrier for the post office. Pete's daughter, Cynthia, is living with them, and Patty gave birth to a son, Michael, in December 1986. I also spoke with Anne Bagamery Hoffman in San Francisco. Anne missed our 10th Reunion but says she is going back to Hanover this summer to write a story for the Alumni Magazine. Anne did not have any good dirt on anyone, even JeffKrolik, who has kept his name out of this column for a while.
Well that's the news. Send dirt on Bill Woods, or anyone else!
