This year the economy is tight and counterfeiting cases are rampant. I was hired by an alleged counterfeiter, Earl Gray, who had allegedly succumbed to the art after being shown a briefcase full of $1 million in counterfeit cash. Well, Earl and his buddy went on a spree in Atlanta. Their big mistake was passing a bad $20 to the waitress at the Tattletale lounge. (She had seen counterfeit before.)

Earl found himself under arrest and in Federal Court, where we had a bond hearing on the complaint one late Friday afternoon. We made bond, but Earl was from Texas and, of course, had no real cash in his pockets. Against my better judgment, I lent him $15 to get to Western Union. The following Monday, Earl was in my office, cash in hand. "If this money is counterfeit, Earl, I'm going to shoot you," I warned. "Not to worry," Earl said, "we never make bills in anything less than $20."

Howard E. Gwynn, a city prosecutor in Newport News, Va., has announced that he will run against the commonwealth of Virfinia's attorney, David B. Olson, in Novemer for the commonwealth attorney position. Howard has been an assistant commonwealth attorney since 1982, and is a native of Newport News. After receiving his B.A. with honors from Dartmouth, he attended the University of Michigan law school and graduated from there in 1977. He worked for the U.S. Customs Department one year after law school and for three years in environmental law for the U.S. Department of Interior. Good luck Howard!

Kent Allenby and his wife, Diantha, recently had their second child, Brian Philip Allenby. Kent is an internist in private practice who participates in research, publishes articles and textbook chapters, and lectures around the country on drug therapies.

Also congratulations to Bob Rooke and his wife, Anne, on their second child Robert Raymond Rooke, and to John Manning and his wife, Dorian, who have announced the birth of Michael John Manning. The Mannings have two other children, Alison 4, and Suzanne 2.

Ken Stowe reports that he is still managing engineering systems at Pizzagalli Construction Company in South Burlington, Vt. Ken founded the one-year-old Integrated Construction Association. The goals of the association are to explore and to promote the integration of processes and systems in the construction process. The company will also provide a billion dollar boost to the U.S. economy in the nineties as integrated manufacturing has in the eighties. Ken and his wife, Eileen, have two daughters, Anna and Dorothy.

David Von Loesecke and his wife, Karen, have recently moved to Beaconsfield, Quebec. David has accepted a position as vice president of engineering with his company's affiliate in Montreal. They spent their last night in Massachusetts with Steve Larmon, Keith Shenberger, and Jake Lamond.

Only a few more months of criminal war stories as I have accepted the position as assistant dean for student affairs at the Walter F. George School of Law of Mercer University, Macon, Ga. That means I will no longer be a resident of Atlanta, Ga. (population 2,000,000), and will become a new resident of Barnesville, Ga. (population 5,000). Barnesville is a sleepy but charming littde town nestled between the two metropoli.
