Greetings from Atlanta! This month I have received news from two classmates. Tom Ostertag sent word of his promotion, in January, to general counsel of Major League Baseball. This promotion follows five years of work in the commissioner's office. Tom and his wife, Judy Russell, live in Tuckahoe, N.Y.Judy is director of strategic planning for a large N.Y.C. jewelry manufacturer. Tom was seated with Steve McGrady at the World Series when the earthquake hit. No bodily injury or property damage was suffered by Tom or Steve, despite the fact that Steven and his family (wife, Pat Powers, and young daughter) live in a house on the side of a hill in Berkeley.

After braving a major earthquake, handling the owner's lockout must have seemed simple to Tom.

I also received a note from Rob Wilkes, who is living in Rye, N.Y. After working for Kidder Peabody for seven years, Bob formed his own investment company in January. Rob married Elizabeth Wattles in July 1985, and he and Elizabeth now have two sons, Robert 3 1/2 and Christopher 1 1/2.

I recently subscribed to AT&T's Reach Out America plan, and after these two pieces of news were exhausted, I was forced to reach out across the country for news. First, I found Doug Brown in Chicago. He is director of marketing for the contact lens division of Schering-Plough. While marriage, marketing, and three kids keep Doug busy, he does keep up with fellow '78 BillDexter, who is doing a sports medicine internship in St. Paul. Doug reports that Mike Elitzer is running his family's retail clothing business in New York state. Also in the Midwest, I found Karen Woods, the very friendly and helpful wife of CraigWoods. Craig, who is a lawyer, was away on a big case in Los Angeles, so Karen passed along the news that they are expecting a baby girl May 1. Karen and Craig were married in 1988 and they are living in the rehabilitated "yuppified" area of downtown Columbus.

I also spoke to David Shoemaker's wife, Candace, in Berkeley, Calif. David is work- ing on his doctoral disseration in drama at Berkeley, and producing plays at the Hard- back Theatre in Berkeley. Candace is a de- signer for Mousefeather Clothes, a children's clothing line based in California. Candace and David are enjoying life in northern California and raising their two-year-old daughter Rosie. Candace and David moved into their new home only ten days before the earthquake. While they had no damage from the quake, they were very happy they had moved because David's previous commuting pattern took him over the double-deck highway which collapsed. Candace also gave me news of David Pollack, who is an architect in Boston after graduating from design school at Harvard. David and his wife are expecting their first child.

Fred Norton's wife, Marena, gave me news of their life in Long Beach, Calif. Fred and Marena have been married four years and have a son, Brendan. Fred is a safety engineer for Liberty Mutual Insurance, and he has recently completed his master's in industrial psychology. Since Long Beach had no significant effects from the recent quakes, Fred did not have to use his psychology to calm himself down. Fred and Marena are, however, planning a relaxing trip to Cancun. While there are only a few '78s in California, the Nortons see ScottChronert, who lives in Manhattan Beach. John Carney also came out for a visit recently.

Well, that's the news. Send more!
