In early july class agents and officers received a brief note from Ed Flanders announcing his retirement as head agent for the Alumni Fund. Ed has served in this capacity for eight long years, about double the time of any of his predecessors on the job, and has served with extraordinary distinction. During his period of service he has needled the class into earning three citations for "outstanding achievement" and set a record for a class 5 8 years out of Dartmouth that still stands. Ed's resignation may have been accelerated by a bit of illness which sent him to the hospital briefly, but there is no question that he had done his bit and not only earned a special place in the hearts of the classmates, but every right to retire with honor and dignity. How to find a successor is the problem. Our president would like to see a show of hands.
Speaking of President Mutt Jennings, as we just did, we all well know that he is a man about town, a patron of the arts, and a peripatetic world traveler. He also must have a boundless capacity to absorb music. When last heard from (in early August) he had just returned from an 18-day trip with the Metropolitan Orchestra, of which he is a supporter. This involved a flight to Copenhagen, where the party boarded the cruise ship Argonaut, which took them to concert spots in Denmark, Belguim, Holland, France, Spain, and Portugal. They flew back from Lisbon. On his return he was busily engaged in arranging his affairs in order to accompany the Boston Symphony, of which he is a trustee, on a two-week tour of Europe starting August 24. Complicated as all this sounds, it is nothing to the problem of finding a successor to Ed Flanders. Pity the poor CEO.
Curly Prosser was anticipating a move to the Kendal retirement home in Hanover in early September. This new establishment is under Quaker management and will house a number of Dartmouth alumni. So far, Curly says, he is the only '28er.
We regret to report the deaths of ChrisLivingston on March 15 and Jud Moulton on June 16.
