When the subject came up I used to say that I'm not really old, I'm not even 90. By the time you read this, if I'm still around, I won't be able to say that any more. Seems to me 90 isn't so old after all.
In pursuit of class inactivities I called Howie Bush. His wife, Deborah, answered the phone to report that Howie's hearing was so bad she would have to talk for him. At this point Howie broke in to say he couldn't hear a word I said. He sounded mad. Otherwise he is in good shape and hoping to get better ear pieces soon.
I'm afraid Sam Gifford isn't entirelyinactive. He still occasionally visits his old office at the Milton Paper Cos., where his son-in-law succeeded him as president. Sam and his wife, Harriet, reside on an estate in Manhasset, N.Y., with an acre of beautiful grounds.
He is proud to report that their daughter is an associate professor at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. A charitable trust that he has established benefits 30 different charities. Supervising all of this must take some doing and would seem to disqualify him for our inactive list.
I regret to report the death of Don Solis on June 1-3.
