Howard Emerson refers to Dartmouth's emphasis on the environment and outdoor activities presented in the winter issue of the Alumm Magazine as a powerful constructive factor in life at Dartmouth, now and in succeeding years. Howard cites his own experience as an example. He recalls the great sense of accomplishment from completing with Tom Chambers a hike from the top of Mt. Moosilauke to Hanover in one day though this was by no means a record.
"A few years later," Howard states, "Dick Chambers and I climbed a mountain in Italy's Dolomites, snow-covered in June. In the thirties, Sam Weed and our wives, Helen and Fanny, started years of outings in the Great Smokies, including skiing a mile high in real snow. My Fanny is no longer with me but I still take a daily jaunt around a circular driveway not a ten-mile hike but closer to a more appropriate quarter-mile.
"In mid-May," Howard continues, "my daughter and I plan a trip to New Hampshire. A first goal is the old Emerson homestead, built 225 years ago in Candia, where my sister and her husband now live; and on to Manchester where my brother, Walter '34, used to live; then to New London to see another brother, Dick '24, and his wife, Mary. They will see that we visit Hanover."
