With autumn fast approaching, most memories of the great 55th Reunion have probably faded into the background. However, remembrance of some of the outstanding moments will be with us for a long time, such as the Glee Club concert and the wonderful Big Band sounds of Bob Button and his Retreads. Those who continued on to the Spaulding Inn (some 40 of us) were greeted by less-than-perfect weather, but the relaxed atmosphere and camaraderie more than made up for that. It was great fun.
Among those who regretted being unable to attend the reunion were Eddie Chamberlain, who had more compelling family commitments, and Fred Babcock. Word from Mac Hill indicates that "Babo justified his absence from the 55th by reason of grandchildren's graduations and corporate duties. As a palliative he is offering a 'preacher's discount' to any wildlife lovers from the class of' 36 who would like to use his Cypress Lodge as headquarters for the harvesting of wild boar, deer, wild turkey (two-legged, not bottled), or bobwhite quail. Call Babo at 813/639-3445 for a date."
The winner of the Class of 1936 Award for 1991 is Nicole Hager. Hope to have more information about her in a fiiture column.
Speaking of awards, our own Paul Guibord was inducted into the New England Lawn Tennis Association Hall of Fame last May. His citation pointed out that in a nine year span (1936-1944) he was ranked number one in New England seven times, number two once, and number four once. He also played doubles, and was ranked either first or second, four different times. The citation also mentions that while at Dartmouth Paul captained the tennis team as well as the hockey team, and in this latter sport was named AilAmerican three times. Congratulations, Paul! Don't forget the fall mini-reunion, October 11-12, the weekend of the Holy Cross football game. As usual, that same Paul Guibord has reserved a block of rooms at the Econo Inn in West Lebanon, and there may still be some available. The Saturday night dinner will again be at Pierce's Inn in Etna, with Friday night's location yet to be determined.
In the meantime, Harry Coronis has lined up some 27 people, many of them '36ers, for another of his renowned trips to Greece. Between September 7 and 21 their itinerary will include visits to Delphi, Olympia, and Corinth, as well as the Islands of Crete and Rhodes. The grand finale of the tour is to be a fourday stay in the city of Athens. We await their reports on the high spots of the tour.
