On July 15 some 39 of us met at Mystic, Conn., for the annual '36 lobster bake. The day was warm but breezy—very comfortable for our early afternoon picnic We were pleased to have among us PeggyLancaster and her husband of less than a week, Bill Cushwa, a welcome addition to the group. And it was good to see Paul andCathie Lynch, who had been missing from several gatherings due to health problems for both of them. Dick and Katie Wilson, another Connecticut couple not seen in some time, were also aboard. And Pete Fitzherbert, just a few weeks after losing his beloved Barbara to Alzheimer's disease, was there keeping up his strong ties with the class and having a long visit with old friends Karl and DorothyWolff. As always, it was good to be a part of such a fine gathering, but we had hoped for a larger turnout.
Among the missing were Frank and GerryKappler and Bill Niss. As of late summer Frank was coming along slowly after a series of operations on hip, knee and back, plus tendinitis in the right shoulder. It's easy to see how that combination can cause problems with mobility! However, his mind is sharp as ever, as one can tell from reading Tithe. Flead Agent Bill Niss is quite mobile and doing very well after knee operations—and then replacement of a section of the aorta with a plastic tube. A rugged man! Incidentally, the 1993 Alumni Fund reached a new height of close to $13,000,000. '36 did not break any records but our dollar amount was considerably higher than the previous year, thanks in part to Bill's hard work.
Frank and Marge Curtis pulled up stakes in August and moved from Nashua to Punta Gorda, Fla. By Christmas they should be joined for the winter by those regular '36 snowbirds, Fernalds, Martenses, Phyll England, and Coronises. Harry and Rose should have recovered by now from a two-week jaunt to Britain in September.
Bob Fernald is looking for a few more classmates to join the Athletic Sponsor Program. If Bob should contact you, do consider supporting the "fly-in" program.
Looking forward to seeing many of you in Hanover for the mini-reunion and Cornell game October 22-23.
