Back to the keyboard for another month's musings... It's good to hear that someone out there is reading this stuff. Witness this recently received correspondence, which arrived with a birth notice. "Every month my husband, Barry Caldwell, reads the update on the class of 1982 with interest. He always intends to return the green postcard requesting information but never does. "As you can see, we recently gave birth to our daughter Hillary. We've been married three years and got engaged right after reunion in Hanover in 1987.

"Barry recendy accepted a position as counsel to Senator Arlen Spector (R-Penn.). He decided to try life on Capitol Hill after six years of practice in a private law firm. I am on maternity leave from my job as a real-estate loan workout officer with First Chicago's Washington, D.C., office. Sincerely, Phyllis Caldwell."

Congratulations and thanks for the letter, Phyllis. At least someone in the family knows how to correspond. I'll probably hear from Hillary before I hear from Barry.

From the same neck of the woods, TomBurack writes that he "was recently named to the board of trustees of the George C. Marshall Foundation, based in Lexington, Va. The Foundation runs a museum and publishes books focused on Marshall's example as a pubic servant. In addition, the Foundation hosts an annual public service leadership conference for young leaders from around the world, as well as a program for ROTC students. In all, it's an interesting and exciting challenge."

Will Polik is receiving rave reviews for his work in the laser field. Will, assistant professor of chemistry at Hope College in Holland, Mich., has received one of only 16 prestigious Presidential Young Investigator Awards in chemistry from the National Science Foundation. During each of its five years, Will's award will provide $100,000 toward his research into the use of lasers in chemistry. His research involves studying the basic process of how a chemical reaction occurs and how chemical systems respond to the high amounts of energy.

Will has been a member of the Hope faculty since 1988. He earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.

On the job-promotion side, KathyDonohoe has joined the engineering firm of Provan & Lorber as financial manager at their Contoocook headquarters. Kathy received her master's in accounting from Bendey College and is a certified public accountant.

That's about it for now. Enjoy the fall, and I'll be back again when its cold(er) outside.
