51 Let's give ourselves a synchronized, undulating wave for our Alumni Fund production. Herb Knighthas proved that a totally dedicated HCA can uncover the individual motivation that makes each of us tick and give. Some exceptions, to be sure. But when was the last time '5l was in a lead spot in the Green Derby? I won't attempt to scoop Herb's final report, but we know it's a success story.
Within each class agent's contacts there are other stories. I wrote about some in our last two columns. Another was a good telephone visit with Dave Sargeant, who is completing a rough year of recuperation following radical prostate surgery. First, let me assure you that he's in good shape today. But Dave shared some pretty graphic stuff with me in his newly adopted role as an evangelist for annual testing. Absolutely essential is the PSA section of your blood work-up. Dave alerted me to the fact that prostate cancer is the number-one mankiller these days and that the PSA test is today's key to early detection.
A bit luckier has been President Joe Welch. Joe's prostate problem was discovered early enough that he was able, thanks to surgery back in March, to avoid some of the longterm treatment that Dave underwent. Joe was back in the hospital for ten days in June with blood clots, but up and out and on a cruise with Donna in July. He's long since returned to work but emphatically seconded Dave's advice about exams.
We were pleased to see that Woody Klein has been named editor of The Westport News, in one of N.Y.C.'s most popular Connecticut suburbs. This was announced by the chairman and publisher of Brooks Community Newspapers (to which organization this reporter is not even a far-off stringer). Woody just retired from a 24-year career with IBM, during which he edited its worldwide Think employee magazine and several stockholder publications, among other related duties. Woody edited his high-school paper and has never stopped. Good grief, he even started as a police reporter on The Washington Post. (I was once roasted by a companion of many Texaco years. He took pains to remind everyone that I had not started out as a salesman, like so many oil company scions, but rather as a junior salesman. Talk about humble beginnings.) Of course, we remember Woody from the D and from his heroic production of our 25th Reunion album—to which we still refer often. Woody has had a brilliant career, has been recognized with several professional awards, and you've read his stories in many, many publications. He's well known in Westport for his "Out of the Woods" column, contributed for about 20 years. Woody has been active in Westport's representative town meeting and its United Way, and he is a patron of the library.
Word has been received of the death of Robert J. Lyon on February 1. Also, we've just learned of the April 18 death of KennethH. Little, at least the sixth member of his family to graduate from Dartmouth. The class extends sincere condolences to the families of Bob and Ken. Obituaries will appear in a future issue.
