We had a marvelous time at the mini-reunion on Dartmouth Night Weekend, with one of the largest '61 turnouts in recent memory. Our class dinner Saturday night became a six-course French dinner at Tony and Theresa Field's new Anthony Field Gallery Bed & Breakfast in Hartford, Vt. It is situated in the old Freegrace-Levitt Tavern building at 94 Center of Town Road. The class, spouses, and undergraduate children sprawled over seven tables, each of which seated eight to ten, in three rooms. (The cocktail party was in a fourth room.) Some classmates who marched in the Dartmouth Night parade, or who came by our now-traditional and very crowded cookout at the Fayerweathers, were unable to get to the dinner.

The Fields were kind enough to accommodate us after the DDA decided they couldn't serve us, despite our longstanding reservations for the DOC House on Occom Pond. (According to the College bureaucracy, only the DDA can serve there, and DDA service had been automatic in the past once the DOC House was reserved.) Theresa treated us to something special. Even the order of the courses was French: the salad followed by the main course, which in tarn was followed by a cheese course, etc.

Excitement is building for our special Los Angeles reunion, May 6-9. President ArtKelton reported at our class meeting that reservations are pouring in. He said 25 guys said yes to Oscar Arslanian within days of the mailing. Please send your card in to Oscar ASAP to help aid his planning.

I'll be distributing minutes of the class meeting through the mail, but here are key highlights: Henry Eberhardt reported a class goal for the 1993 Alumni Fund of $168,000. He's looking for new faces to help in the campaign. With two past treasurers, BobRosier and Vic Rich, present, treasurer IvarJozus said this year's dues notice had just been sent. A discussion followed on how to increase class-dues payers, since the class pays for Alumni Magazine subscriptions for 604 classmates, and our dues are supposed to help us cover that subscription, among other things. We decided to repeat dues notices and perhaps use distinctive envelopes.

Class Projects Chair Mike Murphy, reported several ideas for projects. More details on this when you get your minutes. (We don't want to tip our hand to other classes.) KenKolb, whose daughter is a College cheerleader, made an impassioned plea for assistance for the cheerleaders because the College budget cuts have eliminated their travel. Your classmates present voted to give them $500.

Art Kelton reported that our 35th Reunion may be moved to 1996 (our real 35th) and back to the weekend. The College is considering major changes in reunion scheduling.

I collected lots of news about individual classmates which I will be sharing over the next few issues. Dartmouth's Jay Fiedler '94, grandnephew of the conductor, rubbed out Bill King '63's single-game passing record to beat Yale 39-27.

Did you see the quote in the October 12 Newsweek's article "Sears: Minding Their Stores?" "Says James Baum of Morris, III., whose 117-year-old family-retail business predates Sears by a decade, 'The problem is: the customer went upscale and downscale at the same time. Today he drives a BMW and buys bulk at Wal-Mart.
