WHILE POLLS show that a majority of Dartmouth students vote Democratic, these same surveys show that the College remains the most conservative in the Ivy League. Where else would students celebrate Ronald Reagan's birthday? Just two weeks before the New Hampshire primaries, the Conservative Union at Dartmouth (CUaD) held an 81 st birthday party for the celluloid cowboy and global superhero.
The celebration began with a game that was a favorite of the era: a trivia contest. (For the record, Reagan's two Presidential poodles were Lucky and Rex.) Matt Calkins '94, president of CUaD, read Reagan's "stump" speech from the 1984 convention, which was followed by a short film highlighting Reagan's eight years in office. A showing of "Knute Rockne, Ail- American," with Reagan's immortal line, "Win one for the Gipper!", continued the evening's festivities. Refreshments included a cake and,of course, jellybeans. A birthday card signed by those present was mailed to Reagan's home in California.
Schuyler Henderson '94, secretary of CUaD and organizer of the event, said honoring Reagan's presidency on campus was a way of "trying to increase conservative activism."
Memo to the CUaD for next year: Dan Quayle's birthday is February 4. That's just two days before Reagan's 82nd.
