"Popular Bob" Clark, past mayor of Keene, N.H., well known for his involvement in a multitude of charitable, church, and civic activities, recently received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award recognizing his devotion to the community. The $1,000 donation in his name by the Keene Rotary Club to the Rotary Foundation is used to benefit students worldwide with scholarships to promote international goodwill and understanding.
Fritz and Nance Geller recently lunched with Bob and Bunny and agree that Bob has done a lot for Keene. Returning home from a wilderness canoe trip in Maine, the Gellers visited John Hyde in North Woodstock, N.H., very busy with his portable sawmill and shingle-making machine. John and Betty recently built a three-car garage/barn out of pine they planted 40 years ago, and they enjoy one of Franconia Notch's best views. Fritz and Nance paid a spring visit to the Grand Canyon and Flagstaff. As you read this they have just returned from France and Germany.
Margo Kimball '81, daughter of Jack andSue Kimball of Topsfield, Mass., enthusiastically reports that the Kimballs have a first grandchild, Jacklyn, born to Jack and Sue's son Rick '78. Jack is retired from practicing law with Hale and Dorr in Boston.
Bob Liming, retired in Lebanon, sees Fred Stockwell and is full of praise for Fred's Adventures in Photography. While visiting the Southeast, Bob and Barbara saw Mike and Connie Thurston ("Mike almost likes golf") and golfed with Bobbie Mosenthal, who is doing great but misses Bodie. Bob was impressed by a talk given by President Freedman at an Alumni Council meeting and believes he is becoming "more Dartmouth all the time." He was also impressed by VP/Treasurer Lyn Hutton, who handles the College's financial affairs and seems exceptionally knowledgeable. This year's applications and SAT scores hit an all-time high. From his vantage point, Dartmouth is a vibrant and progressive institution.
And now on with the results of the questionnaires. Although not an overwhelming response, we think you'll find the findings
interesting. Who did you vote for in the last presidential election (answers in percentage points)? Clinton 53; Bush 37; Perot 10. Is Clinton doing a good job? Yes: 44; no: 25; mixed: 31. What do you think of Hillary? Pro: 50; wish she's go away: 36; a bit of both: 14.
On Clinton, good marks for sound objectives and effort, but poor advisors and appointees have hampered performance; weak on foreign affairs; has not kept campaign promises; "gutsy"; "brainy"; "stay in Washington —travel less"; "work harder on debt reduction"; "voted for him but a great disappointment"; "good politician, poor administrator."
As for Hillary, "intelligent," "sharp," "clever," "pioneering," but many would prefer she revert to a more typical first-lady role, not play "Mrs. President"; she is in over her head on health care; is "doing fine"; she should confine her activity to "writing a book on cattle futures"; be less arrogant; "too radical." Expressions of admiration are mixed with concerns that she is too "out in front."
