We are now well represented in the Hanover area with 26 classmates, 23 wives, and five widows in residence. Thirty-five of these recently joined us in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont for cock- tails outdoors followed by lunch indoors for the second year in a row because of rain.
Mary and Howie Croninger hosted a dinner party at Kendal for Kay and TedHarbaugh, who had been with a mission of U.S. music teachers visiting Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. They gave us a fascinating description of meetings widi their contemporaries in schools, trying out hamburgers at McDonalds in Moscow, experiencing daily traffic jams in many cities, going to weekend "dachas," viewing restoration of beautiful old buildings, inspecting construction of new apartments for returning soldiers, and sensing the need and desire for a change from the old Soviet system.
Marvin Rauch reports that at long last he has overcome his dread of retiring and now is singing the glories of being sick, old, and free. Bob and Audrey Richter have sold their house in Sarasota and moved into a retirement community. Unfortunately, he has given up golf after 65 years but notes that the local Dartmouth group meets for lunch about twice a month. Bill and Philinda Krieg have pulled up stakes and moved permanently from Bethesda, Md., to Sarasota. He recently completed a study of book length entitled Bolivia's Quest for the Sea, a copy of which soon should be lodged in Baker Library.
Mary Petke recently underwent a successful quadruple bypass and helped Walt celebrate what he euphemistically called his 39th birthday. She sounded a bit sad that all of their four grandsons live on the West Coast. Hat Hattenbach still goes to his Coconut Grove office, plays tennis with men 30 years younger and, with Muriel, sees a great deal of their family. Pat and Scotty McPherson celebrated his 80th in Minneapolis with children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren before taking off for a 1,000-mile cruise up the Amazon to Manaus. Helen and RudyPacht and Bea and Dero Saunders were recendy entertained by Maysel and Ed Ramsey in Corona Del Mar, and during dinner they unanimously declared a moratorium on deaths prior to our 60th reunion.
In the next issue we will report in depth about the activities of the peripatetic EarlArthurs.
