I bet you have forgotten Al Gazzaniga, the starting left tackle on the varsity football team our sophomore, junior, and senior years. A letter from his son David '89 reminded me that I had done just that. David writes that his father, in addition to continuing his work as a cardiothoracic, pediatric, and general surgeon, is now chief of staff at St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange, Calif. David is following in his footsteps, having attended Dartmouth Medical School, and is now preparing to enter the Harvard Orthopedic Program this fall. Personally, I owe Al a great vote of thanks, whether he realizes it or not. In die spring of our sophomore year, I studied with him for the final in Zoology 1. Al came through with a resounding "A" in the course, while I came in with a not-too-spectacular "C+." I needed no further convincing that the medical profession was not for me.

John Trimble called me to share the news of the death of Peter Hawes following a brief battle with cancer. Peter was living in Carmel Valley at the time and was the president of Design Professionals Insurance Company which specializes in covering architects and engineers. A complete obituary will appear in a later issue.

As I write this column, John will be completing his efforts at gathering support for the '94 Alumni Fund. I am looking forward to the Green Derby results, confident that the class of '58 will have offered its usual strong support of the fund and that the participation numbers will be up from last year. Sandwiched in between his work for the class, John manages to continue his banking career and find time for some golf. He lives in Short Hills, N.J.

This time 40 years ago, we were busy trying to figure out what to take to Hanover. Names of roommates never heard of before were arriving in the mail, and anxieties were creeping into our stomachs. Letters were arriving seeking our participation in the Outing Club and asking us to sign up for linen service. Forty years. Makes one realize that the years are marching along more and more quickly. But I'm not getting any older, it's just my children who are. Have a great summer.
