An article in the Greenwich Time on Sunday, January 31, was devoted to Paul Lynch's service to the community, primarily his work on the Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals. Paul has served on the board for 32 years and has been its chairman since 1978. The board meets once a month, and their sessions often last until well after midnight, due in part to their unusual policy of giving applicants for variances a decision on the night they first come before the board. Paul is, of course, well qualified for his position, having been senior counsel at NBC and then assistant general counsel of Metromedia before retiring in 1980. Because of his service to the community he was named Outstanding Citizen of Greenwich 1984 by the Exchange Club, and in 1989 he was given the Liberty Bell Award as outstanding citizen by the Greenwich Bar Association. Paul is also a past president of the Greenwich Lions Club, a distinction shared by two other '36ers, Bob Button and Jack Smith.
Speaking of awards, according to a news release from TAPPI, A. Thomas Luey was honored by that organization with the Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Award. TAPPI is the world's largest technical association for the paper and related industries, and "the Award is the highest honor that the Association can bestow upon an individual for preeminent scientific and engineering achievements in the world's pulp, paperboard, and forest products industries." The Award is accompanied by a substantial cash prize and was presented to him at a ceremony during TAPPI's Annual Meeting in Atlanta on April 19. Tom served as manager for the Boxboard Research and Development Association for more than 25 years and was responsible for many technical innovations in the industry, particularly in the use of recycled materials. He has published many articles in industry journals and was responsible for all definitions regarding paperboard in the Dictionary of Paper. Congratulations to Tom, and to Paul Lynch as well!
Last chance for me to remind you of the' 36 Lobster Lunch at Mystic, Conn., on July 15. If you have not yet been to one, try to make it this year.
