On February 13,13 members of the class executive committee met at A1 Mori's. Several '51 guests were invited as they always are—to join the proceedings. We received a report on the Spirit of '51 Award presented at a West Coast meeting attended by PeirceMcKee, Jim Branston, Pete Bogardus, JimDanaher, Norm Colby, Lu Martin, and President Jim Freedman. In accepting, a clearly moved Mike Heyman responded to the citation saying, "That's me. That's how I feel about things." The text of the award has by now appeared in Fifty-One Fables.
Always a focal point of these meetings is Bob Hustek's report on class projects. Bob has created a series of events which express the class's appreciation to various College or town employees. The night of our meeting, '5l provided basketball tickets for DDA workers. In return, 'Sis were invited to the DDA post-game reception where President Freedman was especially generous in his remarks about our class projects.
Some of Bob's other efforts include assistance to an Asian studies group on campus, discount tickets for Hanover K-6th grade students for various Hopkins Center programs, and financial assistance for certain disabled Dartmouth students needing a form of diagnostic testing not covered by insurance. Bob is also preparing something for the Hitchcock Hospital housekeeping workers. His greatest satisfaction (for the moment) comes from persuading the College to inaugurate an equestrian therapeutic program for disabled Hanover-area kids and undergraduates. It's another splendid way of "nurturing the relationship between College, community, and class." The Executive Committee approved a motion that will provide $3,000 of class funds, of which $1,500 is surplus from the John Sloan Dickey Room project last year—unspent because of your combined generosity in special gifts. Bob sent out 200 handwritten letters to attract that support!
Mini-reunion plans: ten rooms are blocked at Days Inn, Lebanon, for Dartmouth Night Weekend. Skip and Bill Brooks will look for you in Madison, Conn., after the October 16 Yale game in New Haven.
And the pleasant surprise we teased you with last month: Joe Yukica, former head football coach and now a resident of Grantham, N.H., has accepted the class's invitation to become a '51A ("adopted"). Joe and Betty will have all the rights and privileges, and we look forward to their participation. (Will someone alert Herb Knight?)
Bill Leffler has written Joe Welch a suggestion that the class take an interest in classmates who are down on their luck for whatever reason. If you have ideas on the subject, contact Bill or Joe.
In other news, members of two other classes have sent me clippings about Bob Koski's talk to the Ivy League Club of Sarasota. Bob spoke again of his organization, Sun Hydraulics Corp., where job titles are "out" and getting things done as a team is "in." He spoke of employees who "stand up and add value" versus employees who "sit down and add cost." Rey Moulton '35 wrote that Bob addressed a full house and is "one smart cookie."
The Alumni Fund is in full swing. You should be making your calls, planning your gift, and writing your check so that we can achieve the class goal of $150,051.
