Have you turned 50 yet? May 14-16 there was a special weekend party in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the 50th birthdays of all members of the class of '65. We owe our thanks to the planning committee which included Rick Davey and Don Boardman (co-chairs), Marc Efron, Ted Bracken, Bob McConnaughey, John Fletcher, and Jerry Putnam. And thanks to Allen Zem for getting the whole idea started. Agreat time was had by about 70 classmates, spouses and significant others.

The weekend opened with a very classy reception at Ted Bracken's townhouse followed by a late-evening bus tour of the monuments. About half of us were up early die next day for a breakfast discussion of what it was like to turn SO, led by classmate Tom Wise. Afterwards, the group spent a gorgeous day on a Potomac River cruise. On Saturday evening we met at the Mayflower Hotel for a great reception and dinner featuring birthday toasts, songs, and a cake for all of us. Later, there was a little dancing and lots of rationalization about how we can't stay up late anymore.

Early Sunday morning about 30 of us met at the Vietnam Memorial for a brief service in memory of Dennis P. Barger, Stephen S. MacVean, John C. Seel, and Jack G. Livingston, all '65s killed in Southeast Asia. Vietnam veterans present, including Jack McLean, Dave Milkowski, Larry Duffy, and Don Boardman, each said a few words and laid flowers on the wall.

All in all, it was a very memorable weekend. Other '65s in attendance included Jim Griffiths, Roger Hanson, Frank Hermes, Stu Keiller, Norm Leach, Tom Long, Lee Mercer, Doug Miller, Jeff Panitt, Jerry Putnam, Jim Roche, Roger Snyder, Joel Sternman, Steve Waterhouse, Bill Webster, Jay Wright, Howard Mueller, Mike Lewis, Mark Nackman, Frank Burke, and Ted Friel.

A 50th birthday celebration is significant. But here is one milestone that deserved great applause: at the Class Officers Weekend banquet on May 7 Steve Waterhouse received a prestigious award that all of us would love to earn, the Dartmouth Alumni Award. As Steve stood humbly, yet deservedly on the stage, we listened to a review of his impressive service to Dartmoudi and his amazing success as an international businessman. It was a proud moment for Steve and Linda and all members of the class of '65, especially those of us who were present: Allen and Judy Zern, Jim and Debbie Griffiths, Bill and Sue Webster Jack and Sue Heidbrink, and Joel Sternman.

At the reception before the banquet, Steve gave me this update for the column. While in Hong Kong he visited with Sin-Sing Chiu, who has a seat on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and who runs a mini-conglomerate of businesses with his wife, brother, and sister-in-law. Sing hopes that Dartmouth will do its best to enroll top students from China. Steve's daughter Mindy '93 will be enrolled in a doctoral program in French literature at the University of Michigan in the fall.

Steve had more for us on Saturday as he brought us up-to-date on the class treasury. Treasurer Waterhouse and all members of the class of '65 are very thankful to those of you who have paid your class dues and who have supported our special class funds. We are in the black and are in a position to support the Memorial Book Fund, the Native American Awards, and the restoration of Dartmouth's Daniel Webster collection and archives in Webster Hall. We all hope that Bill Clinton will succeed the way Steve Waterhouse has.

Jim Griffiths, your famous mini-reunion chairman, is gearing up for the next great gathering, October 29-31. Harvard will be designated loser, and the festivities will begin with the parade and Dartmouth Night activities. Plan now.

I will devote the next column to news from Jim Markworth, Clyde Dietz, Tom Wise, Allen Zern, Jim Griffiths, Brian Walsh, and others.
