From our 31 -Year Report I estimate that approximately 100 classmates had military service in the European Theater of Operations in WWII. Accordingly, I pass along a notice of the ground-breaking ceremony at Caen, Normandy, on the 50th anniversary of D-Day last June, for a monument to honor all Americans who served in the ETO from December 7, 1941 to May 8, 1945. The monument is to be constructed of local stone, and the names and home towns of the veterans will be engraved on stainlesssteel plates affixed to the stone. It will be called the "Wall of Liberty." A veteran or a friend or relative of him or her may call (800) WW2-VETS to procure an application for registration on that wall, or (800) 644-1944 for further information. The first phase of the project is to be completed by the 5 oth anniversary of VE-Day on May 8, 1995, when dedication of the monument will take place.
Most interesting was a letter I received from Rachel Spielman Seder 'B5, an attorney (Harvard Law 'B9) and wife of the youngest of three sons (alljohn Harvards) of Hal Seder. She reported the arrival on June 5 of their first child, Hal's grandson. In my letter of thanks to her for that information I informed her of the foregoing notice, in view of Hal's reported service in the ETO.
After sending my application and a check to cover the certification of registration and three duplicates thereof plus the stainless steel plaque, I told the wife and sons that they might combine a future ride through the Chunnel with a look-see at the Wall.
